Hey guys, i am going to be checking the rod bearing clearances and also the side clearance tonight. I was wondering what i should be looking for in terms of clearance on both the bearings and side. The mains all checked out right on with good clearance, so i expect the rods to be the same, but want to make sure what type of numbers i should be looking for. I will be using plastigage to check the bearing and probably feeler gauges to check out the side clearance. Thanks guys.

bearing clearance on rods.0007 to .00032. Side clearance .015 to .018

By saying that is that the amount that it will move. For example if i pushed it all the way forward, measured, then pushed it all the way back and subtracted? Or is it just the space between the rods sides next to the crank counterweight and the other rod? Thanks a lot for the reply.

Rod side clearance is the space between rods on the same rod journal. I would borrow a set of micrometers and a dial bore gauge to make your measurements. I just finished making those same measurements on my block last week. If you have never done this before, get a book on assembly. Its $20 well spent. Made for good reading during last winters' 2 ft snowstorm!

Stikman you can check the side clearance of the rods with a feeler guage, use the plastigage for bearing clearances.Crankshaft end play is the other check I think you were writing about and that would be .007 you can use a dial guage if you have one or you can use a feeler guage, pry the crank back with a screwdriver measure on a flat surface between cap and crank with feeler guage, pry crank forward measure with feeler guage at the same spot you took last measurement total minus last measure would be your end play.I hope I explained this ok I'm not a very good writer.

JR, thanks for the explanation. I was confused about what side clearance meant on the rods, that was my idea of it, i already checked the crank end play and it is good smile.gif I appreciate all your guys help. I will be doing it today as i couldn't get any red plastigage locally. They will have it tomarrow.
