I'm new here but I' m going to jump right in with my problem. I have a 66 Malibu with a 327. It cranks great idles and revs great. When its under load @ 2500-3500 RPM it starts to miss and spit back thru the carb. This car has done this to some degree for a while. Here's what I've done in steps with little change. Replaced HEI dist, tried all springs, new plugs and wires. Rebuilt carb.
Intitial timing is at 14 with total at 36, all in around 2600rpm. I'm going to adjust the valves today as best I can, but I've never done it before. Any other suggestions?????

I would check your fuel pressure to,i've seen fuel pumps work until they had a load on them.Make sure you don't have a couple of plug wires crossed.Make sure you have aleast 12 volts to the HEI,point dist used a resistor wire to cut back voltage to keep from burning up the points.

Thanks for the reply. I had not thought about the wire to HEI. I am still using the old points wire. Is it hard to change?

No, it is not hard to change, and that could certainly be contributing to your problem by building up resistance to the power supply for the coil.

I forget exactly how I did this on the 'Velle, but you basically cut it off and then route a new (12 guage? can't recall exactly) wire from a switched point on the fuse box to the coil on the HEI. That's a very rough explanation. I imagine if you do a search here you'll find an explanation of exactly how it is done, as this is a fairly common procedure.

Do you have any reason to suspect problems with your carb?

Thanks Tom, I'm gonna give it a try tomorrow.

I'm pretty sure its not the carb. I took off a Holly 4150 and rebuilt the original Carter AFB. It starts and idles a lot better now, but the cutting out is still there. I've thrown so much at it lately, the HEI wire won't be a big deal.

Thanks guys. It seems the HEI wire was the problem. I ran a 10g wire from the fuse panel to the HEI this morning and what a difference! I can't believe after all the things I've done that it was just that wire. You guys are great!
