I bought a Taiwanese chrome oil pan. Yeah I know, they're crap and they leak. But for $35, I'm bound and determined to make it work. I bought the $27 one piece rubber gasket to help. My question is, should I use the bolt rails that came on the GM pan? There's no reinforcement on the chrome job. Any advice?

Why not? About impossible to see anyway. Make sure you straighten the bolt holes out. Don't use very much silicone in the corners either.
You realise that a lot of oil cooling happens in the pan.

If you can sand the mating surface so that it the gasket has something to stick to.

Just my opinion, BUT, the last place I am going to take a chance saving money is on the bottom of my engine. You are right about leaks though, even more expensive chrome pans are prone to leakage. The last thing that I want to do is pull my engine for a stupid pan leak.

I got a good new steel oil pan from a business I found on ebay, same price around $35. I stay away from chrome pieces since I was told the actual chroming process warps the metal some and causes the leaks. I would definately use the rails to help evenly clamp the pan, especially a chrome one.

It's a done deal now. I did rough up the chrome on the mounting surfaces. It all lined up perfect and I have a lot of confidence in that gasket. After the install, I loaded up the paint gun and put on 4 good coats of urethane orange over top of it all. Extra sealing powers :D
Thanks for the input. I'll let you know how it works.
