: leaky valve cover gasket
chadh5 Oct 8th, 02, 5:31 PM My new valve cover gaskets are leaky on the drivers rear. They are cork. I didn't glue them down or anything. Should I get the rubber kind? Silicone these down? Suggestions?

scooter67 Oct 8th, 02, 5:35 PM I usually use a film of form a gasket or some silicon to 'glue' them to my valvecovers, let them sit for 10 min to set, and install. This is with chrome cheapy valvecovers. I also use the spreaders. I hate these cheap chrome v-covers, but it's on the stand so what ya gonna do? http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

Ted6555 Oct 8th, 02, 7:26 PM I use cast aluminium covers. I Permatex cork gaskets to the covers. Let sit 1 hr. or more, tighten them down. The following day or two, I remove them again. There will be a slight indentation in the cork. I clean the cork with lacquer thinner, then put a medium bead of silicon in the indentation. I let them sit untill no longer sticky, then I reinstall the covers. Works for me....No Leaks!

mls48341 Oct 9th, 02, 4:54 PM I use the rubber steel core gaskets from Summit.The 3/16" thick ones.Like $12.95 a pair I think.No sealer,re-used many times without leaks.

Would Napa have something like that?
427L88 Oct 11th, 02, 10:08 AM Sure they do FelPro makes both cork and rubber. I use both for clearance.
If you are using stamped steel covers. be sure to flatten the rails. I used a nice chunk of oak ( a 10" pice of 2X4 would be fine) and a rubber mallet. Use the wood as your flat surface and tap the rails down flat against it.
TBone65 Oct 12th, 02, 1:23 AM Anyone run Comp Cams polymer covers? Whats the best gasket to use? The corks seem to always leak a little.

I had a set of the harman? valve covers that were polymer i think cc bought them out and i found out if i tighted them to much that would make them leak. I just siliconed both sides of the gasket and then tightened them with a allen wrench
Hope that helps some Kevin
TBone65 Oct 12th, 02, 12:17 PM Cool, thanks for the info. That makes sense. The CC's have the wonderful finger knobs on them and Im always checking them for tightness, and they always seem to leak a little. I'll try siliconing both sides.
