I am rebuilding the 350 in my 71 Chevelle SS.
I am about to install new Vortec heads. I am using GM head gasket #10105117 they are steel with some sort of black coating. Do I need to use sealer with these gaskets? Which side gets mounted facing up towards the bottom of the heads? Is it the raised side with the part# on it?

You should probably check with someone at GMPP on this one. Although most steel gaskets that have a coating on them do not require a sealer, I don't know about the GM ones. If the black coating is a heat sensitive sealer, like Mr Gasket uses, then putting any other gasket sealer on it might make it worse. If the black coating is simply a rust preventative coating, then you may need an additional sealer. I dont mean to sound confusing, but it is very critical that you install it the way the manufacturer intended, especially with the flimsy Vortech heads.
Bottom line, check with GM
