Anybody have any problems or issues with these? I am contemplating getting the Summit Universal Combination Cooler Kit (P/N SUM-G4978) for engine oil and auto transmission fluid that has a kit to remote the engine oil filter. I will be using it with a small block.
I like the idea of putting the oil filter in a convenient spot, because I change oil frequently, but if they leak or have other issues I will just go for the trans cooler.

i have that same kit in my 69. no leaks at all. only problem i had was due too my own stupidity. i let the line get a bit too close to the PS pully. big big mess. but overall very good.

Check all your fittings for size, I had a transdapt kit that was severely resticted in the hose end fittings. Be careful using 90 degree AN fittings as well, had a Moroso(?) setup that used -10AN ss braided and fittings that would show a 10psi oil pressure drop over 4000rpm. Removed the remote, pressure became normal again linear to bypass 70 psi.

Don't know anything about the Summit piece, but have used remore oil filters on many engines.
Use only a good quality remote bracket that has good, open passages. Do not use 90 degree fittings, if possible. If it is necessary to use 90 degree fittings, use the ones that are smooth inside (can't remember what they call them, but Russell, Earl's, etc. have them).
Use good quality hoses, with minimal bends. Stainless braided lines are optimal, but good quality rubber (with assembled or crimped ends!) will work OK.
Keep the lines and plumbing away from exhaust system, belts/pulleys, clutch and shifter linkage.
I am a fan of high volume oil pumps and this is one instance where they are absolutely necessary.

Thanks for the advice. I will probably go ahead and get the combo cooler.
Those oil mishaps can be messy. I had a freshly painted 327 in my engine bay when the feed line for my mechanical oil pressure gauge blew out of the fitting in the engine.. I had a high volume pump too. Smoke everywhere, and naturally the gauge read 0 pressure.. I thought I had blown the motor!

Early Novas (62-67) must use a remote filter unless you are lucky enough to have one of those rare Nova V8 blocks with the recessed filter mounting pad. Maybe if you find a Nova forum, like at www.chevytalk.com, (http://www.chevytalk.com,) you will find more people who have used them. I had a 65 Nova with remote filter on a 350, it wasn't a problem.
