: An option for those who can't run a cold air tube

I run a TPI type EFI engine. With my serpentine belt system, I don't have a lot of extra room, and I already was running into room just getting a K&N air filter for the oval throttle body to fit decently since it has to share some space with the upper rad hose. There's no place for a large cold air tube to run across the front of the engine or anywhere near where it should be. Here's what I came up with for now:

I had a duct unit form a TBI camaro/corvette that I was going to use for mocking up a cold air intake. It is oval at the engine end, and has a 3" or so round end at the other where it would go to the OEM air filter box. It is also tapered and corrugated (though still stiff). I was able to cut it short and fit it right into the end of my K&N and using a 4" clamp, tighten that around the corrugated section which is close to the air filter size already. It pushes the filter out just enough to clear and is away from the belt too.

Here's a couple phone pics to show it. I think the tube is still available from GM and was pretty cheap. I bought it about 2 years ago, so I don't have a price.

Hey Bryan, is there a reason you can't run a cold air set up. There's tons of options for piping and filtration. There's a big benefit to doing this.

This is another GM piece that might help in making a cold-air setup. I believe it is from 87-89 Firebird. I don't have a PN, though. I think I might have it upside down in my pic -- I think in its factory config, it points to the passenger side. The opening is for a TPI style TB and then 3" round at the elbow. Is 3" a limiting factor at 400+ hp?

yeah, I have the alternator, upper hose, and belt all sharing space to the driver's front side of the engine. I would have to go down and towards the passenger side, maybe making a rectangle box under the radiator, but it would probably not give me any noticeable results, especially for a driver and not a racer.

Ya, you may not notice it as much on a fuel injected engine as the FI will compensate for air temp but when its 200 degrees or better under the hood and you're sucking outside air at ambient temp, you do feel it even in a driver.
