: Good 16'' Tire Size upgrade
CelebrityMotorCoV.P. Mar 3rd, 05, 2:10 AM I have recently bought 16 inch wheels for my chevelle and have no idea what size tires to buy for it. i currently have 225/70/15 on the front and 265/60/15 on the rear. if any one could recomend a good size combo. i want a good size for the front and a decent wide size for the rear. thank you
GRN69CHV Mar 3rd, 05, 6:48 AM Maybe something like 225-55-16 up front, w/ 265-50-`6 in the rear. You might even be able to get a 295-50-16 for the rear. If you want something real tall, 285-60's are available in 16" rim size for that fill up the wheelwell look.
sinned Mar 3rd, 05, 10:41 PM I ran 255/50R16's on all 4 corners of my 16X8 Welds before upgrading yet again. They worked well.

johnny69 Mar 9th, 05, 5:43 PM im runnin 255/50/16 ..16x8 all four corners..
Clint44 Mar 9th, 05, 6:40 PM 16's are kinda the redheaded stepchild of the tire family,,hard to find a decent selection.
68Nomad Mar 10th, 05, 1:10 AM Not to hijack but you two running 255/50/16's what backspacing are you running?
sinned Mar 10th, 05, 1:17 AM 4.5" backspace on 16X8 Welds.
www.tirrack.com (http://www.tirrack.com) is the best place to get tires from. Stay away from the cheaper tires (Falken, Vulcan, Ohtsu, Sumitomo, etc...) they never balance true and always fail the road variance spin. I prefer to spend a few extra bucks on top quality rubber and know they will spin true.
For whatever reason Kumho's (cheap tires) seem to do well. The 712 is terrible in the rain but very good on dry pavement. The others do well wet or dry. The 710 is one of the best road race available period.

I have a set of Falken 512 on both my '67 Chevelle (245/45-17) and my '02 PT Cruiser (225/50-16).
No problems here.
All tires easily balanced with minimal weight and ride very smooth at speed.
I do a lot of highway driving and consider myself very fussy when it comes to ride quality.
Clint44 Mar 10th, 05, 1:21 PM Try this link for Tire Rack. http://www.tirerack.com/

I have spun many tires that seemed OK on a regular balancer that are are borderline out of spec on a road force machine.
Just my .02 from over a decade in tire shops.

I have a very good friend who happens to own three Goodyear stores in this area. All equipped with "state of the art" road force balancing machines. One of the first in the state to purchase this equiptment, BTW.
Also, I have two other friends who own large, independent tire shops.
Volume of 600-800 tires a WEEK...everything from wheelbarrows to semis.
I KNOW tires, my friend. ;)
We were pleasantly suprised at the quality of the first set of Falkens I had purchased and mounted at his shop considering the online purchase price was quite a bit lower than local wholesale which is how I normally buy all my tires.
This was last spring for my '67.
I have since recently purchased and mounted another Falken set on my Cruiser, replacing a set of OEM Goodyear LS with only 9k mikes on them.
Again, excellent quality.
The tires are DOT UTQG rated at treadwear 360, Temp A and Traction A.
Just my $.02 with over 30 years in the business.
Ten years...WOW.
Dude, I worked for Dunlop-Tonawanda back in 1971.
sinned Mar 10th, 05, 5:42 PM Nevermind, not worth it.
