Dale McIntosh has been working on this subject and there was quite a few long postings. hHe has them collected on http://www.chevellestuff.com/tech/tire_wheel.htm

I agree that we should make this a regular recurring item on our board for reference purposes.

Good idea!

Decided on this combo after posting a question here. I was probably the 185th person to ask the very same thing, so a database would be very helpful ;)

Rear Tire Size: BFG T/A 255/60/15
Suspension mods: None, just gas shocks and some rubber blocks in the rear springs to level it up (sagging a bit)

Might add that I was plenty p****d after putting the wheels on, they rubbed really bad on the control arms and brake lines. Come to find out that everything was perfect with plenty of clearance once I lowered the jack and got the car on the ground... graemlins/clonk.gif :D

Rod I was thinking the same thing... break it down into year, rim size, stock/modified etc. I was actually thinking about starting an Excel spreadsheet and put data in it as the thread grows. Would be very easy to search and re-sort by year, rim size etc. I'm too lazy... I mean busy to do it though smile.gif

1970 GMuscle, I had some minor rubbing in the inner wheel well but nothing a few lite taps with a hammer did not take care of. The outer wheel well lip is also rolled. I can almost run my hand between the tire and the lip. Sorry no pictures. I don't know if they are the same size wheel well but there is a guy around town with a 69SS chevelle with the same tires, but his wheel well lip measures 1" higher than mine

It would also help if there were a space for modifications required (such as trimming the fender lip, raising the ride height or moving the exhaust) to fit a certain size wheel & tire combo. I noticed that with a 15 X 10 5 1/2" backspace wheel the tire size may be the reason you would need to make modifications since a 275 60/15 will fit on a 15 X 7, 8 or 10 without any problem. It seems that the widest tire you can fit on that rim is a 50 series tire (295 50/15) which works without any modifications as well but anything wider or taller may cause problems (at least on '68 thru '72 Chevelles).

I do not want to make any modifications to fit my choice of wheels & tires. I just want to get the widest rear tire that I can fit. This is a great idea! Thanks for your help!!!

Do you want one of us to come over and personally fit the rolling stock on your car? Sheesh! :) But seriously,we don't want you to cut up your car,Bob.
If you have to do that, someone took a shortcut somewhere, right?
Of course you can run a wider & taller tire than a 295/50/15. Some people have squeezed in a 315 or even a 325 tire. Someone here is running a 285/70/15 tire on their A-body. A 285/70/15 is a bunch taller than a 295/50/15.
Thanks for your input.

Here's a couple of ways to measure your car to see just how big a wheel & tire you can actually fit. One's is something you can build in your spare time and the other one is ready-to-go.

hey dave i have a stock rear end in my 65 stock 12 bolt stock brakes. do you know the widest tire and wheel i can go i see that you have a 9.5 in wide wheels can you go to 10 in or will it rub also did you have to grind your inner fender wheel. thanks jon.

David Bates
Mar 16th, 05, 5:47 AM
Jon, You can go with the 10" wheel provided you get the backspacing correct - probably 5-3/4" to 5-7/8" range is about right. Yes, my outer lips are rolled to comfortably fit the P285/40ZR17's in there. I have no rubbing at all!

Clint44
Mar 16th, 05, 12:55 PM
Jon could get a wheel with 6" backspacing and use thin spacers to get it dialed in just right. It's always better to have a little too much backspacing than not enough. Too little and new wheels are needed.

Jon,you really can't use my car for any comparisons because it's been tubbed & backhalved. No lip rolling was needed or done.

The main intent is to show what tire & wheel combos can fit "without" body modifications.

Hi Guys and Gals. Hope this reply doesn't get off message, but haven't taken the time yet to figure out the new changes in the Team Chevelle site.

Is the quote below accurate????? This is in response to our searching for AMERICAN RACING OUTLAW II WHEELS, and if the quote is true, how do you/we decide on purchasing the wheels Made In China?????

"OK the information that I found out about these wheels, is that about 6 years ago when they were still made in the USA they would/ could possibly carry that 3100 lb load rating on that wheel, but becuase almost all wheels are made in China now, they carry (they told me now) a 2200 lb load rating.

So now all I need to know is if you want the wheels that I have found? With the 2100 - 2200 lb load rating on them? Let me know at your earliest convencie".

Any info greatly appreciated.

That was different. Must have hit a wrong key to post it that way.

Hey Clint44,
Yesterday I was browsing thru the 'wheel & tires' posts and came across a reply, thought it was yours, referring to the 'wheel & tire database', but it had a link to another page. It had compiled this info in order by year/make of car, owners name underneath, and to the right of that it had wheel/tire size, bs, etc, and if you clicked on the model of the car, on some of them, it took you to their picture of the car if they had one. I thought this was really a cool tool, but darned if I can find where I found it. Can you help?

dave or clint i finally have saved what i hope is enough after buying some other toys to buy a new set of wheels or at least the rears. i would like some 10 in wide with 6 in of backspacing rims, question is who makes 15x10 or 16x10 with 6in of backspacing. thanks jon

Clint44
May 24th, 05, 1:04 AM
Guess my first question is this: will a 10" rim fit under a 65 w/stock suspension? Regardless,I would go with a 15" rim (or 17") because 16" tire selection leaves something to be desired.
Any two-piece wheel worth its salt should be available in 6" backspacing.

on page 3 i believe you said you thought id be able to fit a 15x10 with 6in of backspacing and then use shims to make it fit.

I said "if" a 10" rim would fit,one could get them with 6" backspacing and add thin disc brake spacers if the backspacing was a little too much.
The key word in all this is "IF". I don't know if a 10" wide rim will fit the rear of a 64-65 A-body and am not sure if David Bates does, either. Have said this before but I'll say it again,,I'm not 100% sure a 10" rim will fit and I have never seen a pair on a 64-65 with or without mods.
Just being honest here,Jon,so you don't buy something that might not fit.

Who said anything about you buying Fikse wheels? There are lots of inexpensive 17's out there,Jon. 'Course, inexpensive is a relative term. $200-250 per wheel is what I call a reasonable price. Some people on here think it's outrageous to spend that much for one wheel. However, they sure don't seem to mind spending a fortune on their engines and tranmissions.

jocww
May 27th, 05, 2:14 AM
i dont think i want 17s i think id prefer to stay with 15s or 16s. 250 at list isnt bad because i can get it at cost in most cases. and i would prob only get the rear 2 first and then the front two as soon as the tires wear out. thats why i was hoping for some a/r daisys in a 15x10 that way id only have to buy 2. but if 10s wont fit i guess ill have to be content with 8s

No problem with front but the rear tires rub the fenders if I hit a dip in the road with people in the back because I need more back space. You need at least 4 1/2" backspace in the rear with the 275's. It looks nice with the tires pushed out farther but I had to install Airlift 1000 air bags in the springs to limit the suspension travel & stop the tires from hitting. I knew better but I didn't feel like waiting up to 10 weeks to custom order the wheels with a 4 1/2" backspace. From what I understand you can go up to a 5 1/2" backspace with a 10" rim and squeeze a 295 tire in the rear.

My 69 SS has 2 inch dropped spindles up front and Hotchkis two inch drop springs in the rear. I used Hotchkis sway bars front and rear, Hotchkis adjustable uppers and lowers in the rear and polyurethane bushings. I have ZERO wheel hop and the car handles very well in the corners, feeling comparable to my 97 Z-28.

On the rear I have 18 x 10 inch wheels with 6 inches of backspacing. If your car body is centered on the frame you can go to 6.25 inch backspacing and 305 wide tires. If you go to 17 or 18 inch wheels the 6 inch+ backspacing just puts the wheels outside of the contact point for the shocks in their stock location. I have 295/45/18 tires that are 28.4 inches tall. The tires fit fully inside the wheel wells.

I have a 2nd set for the rear that I have my 305/45/18 Nitto drag radials on (28.8 inches tall). They are 18 x 10's with 6.5 inches of backspacing. I had ford type c-clip eliminators (Dutchman) welded onto my rear end and they added .25 inch outbound to both sides and the Baer rotors put some width outward too. I have no clearance issues that a couple of minutes with a hammer did not resolve. I had to clearance the very rear of the inner tirewell about 1/16 inch.

Up front I have 18 x 8 wheels with 5 1/8 backspacing front with 255/45/18 tires (27.1 inches tall). I used a Hotchkis sway bar up front as it has a tighter radius on the turns at the bushings that is needed for the 5 1/8 backspacing. Use 5 inch or 4 ľ if you use a stock sway bar and you should still clear the fender on a sharp turn. It is a balancing act up front with dropped spindles.

Comments: I was always told that 4.5 inch backspace was what my car needed. The wheel shop told me that they ended up getting a 4.75 inch backspace so I assume that is what it is even though I have never heard of anybody else with this backspace. I have no trouble with rubbing except on the right front when taking a sharp turn and hitting a bump at the same time. It only rubs on the inner fender where it kicks down a bit next to one of the bolts. Nitto NT450s are worthless don't buy um. Barely lasted 20,000 miles and didn't have the grip that a tire with that little life should have.

Ok I’m a bit of a novice so any help would be greatly appreciated. I have 71 Malibu and just picked some corvette rally wheels (15x8). What size tires would you suggest? I'm looking for a more aggressive look than the 14" wheels currently give the car.

Yes I have, but I don’t know what the individual numbers mean on the specs people list for their tire size.

Clint44
Nov 28th, 05, 11:19 PM
Not sure I understand the problem but here's where you need to start. If you have 15x8 wheels, first thing you need to know is their backspacing. Once you know that number, you can compare what others with that combo are running. Make sense?

I do not believe that combo will work on a stock rear end especially on a stock frame & unmodified body, i.e. tubed or expanded fender wells.

At the strip I run 28x12x15 MT ET Streets on 8x15 Welds (offset?) on my 67 Elcamino. HOWEVER the rear end is narrowed nearly one inch and the fender lip is rolled.

Clint44
Feb 15th, 06, 6:25 PM
295/50/15's mounted on 15x10 wheels w/5.5"-5.75" will fit the rear of the 66-67. 15x8 wheels w/4.5"-4.75" backspace will work, too.
Like you,I'm kinda confused about what Driver396 is trying to fit.

Street or strip this wheel has the appearance to do it all! Partial polished with as cast spokes for that competition look or full polished for the modern street rod style. The highly curved spokes flow out to join the rim with no steps or corners. A reminder when these wheels had no drop center to prevent the tire from coming off at high speeds on Top Fuel Dragsters. The 35 year old design has the biggest windows you’ll see, making it the most aggressive looking on the market. The 16" is ideal for highboys where the backside can be ordered to create the perfect tire-to-body gap. The spokes start a full 3 1/2 inches back from the front edge on the 16" models giving a very deep appearance.

Note: 6.0" BS will work on the rear (plenty of clearance), but the tires are located "in" a bit too far for my taste. With the 5.5" BS, the wheels are pushed out a bit more, but still plenty of clearance (~3/8"+) to the outer lip...

What is the largest wheel and tire that I can put on a 69 Malibu? I'm concerned that they will rub and I will diminish my turning radius. What modifications will I need to make? I could use any information. Thanks!

No offense but trying to put those tires and wheels on a unmodified El Camino is a dumb idea. My car has been tubbed & backhalved and those tires won't even fit on it.
Why would you want to do this?

They are (according to the catolog) 28"H - Tread W is 10.3" - Sec.W is 12.1" and should be moun ted on a 10" rim. Anyone mounted these on a 70-72 Chevelle? Any thoughts??

I also have a set of 15X8.5 with a 3.75 off set that I hope to completely fit under the wheel wells with an inch shorter on each side 9 inch. I will be using the biggest stickiest tires I can fit on them. Prolly some of those S/S M/T's or maybe Hoosiers. 3.89 or 4.11 gears.

the only thing i would like to add... is that the 15*10's with 245 tire run by wheel well. so im in the works for a new set of rims.

aaron

It's been a long time coming, but I've sent Al an update to the database today. Should be updated version available once he puts the files out there.

Run 5.5" of Backspacing on the wheel. WORST case (you never know what's been done to your car over the years) you may have to grind or roll a tiny bit of the inside wheel well lip off.
However, my car and many others have that exact size without need for any modifications at all.
