Need some info on how the speaker grills mount on a 70-72 vert. I know the speakers mount into the rear seat frame. My question is do the grills mount on the inside of the top well? In other words does the top well go between the speaker and the grill? Does that make since? Can someone please post a pic of the correct way this should be done.
Thanks TC!

I think your assumption is correct. I know that's the way it is on the 69 convertibles, so I would imagine it's the same for the 70 - 72 model years also.

Convertible rear speakers have special mounts. They are like studs with screws for the speaker grills. The speaker mounts to the rear seat area then the well is placed over them and held in place with the grills.

Thanks for the info. That is what I thought. I vaguely remember my 70 I had but thought that is how it was.

Let me ask this question: I assume you remove the section of well liner between the speaker and grill? To let the speaker "breathe"....

That is correct for 68 to 70, 71-72's used the new oval design rear speaker covers. They have the studs attached to them different than the earlier style. They are mounted from inside the well. The boxes and everything is still intact if you want picts. Ive changed them twice in 30 years as they are useless with the top down and I blew them out !!! My 72 SS conv of 30 plus years has a factory 8 track set up still stock still plays perfect to this day !!!!!

Jim can you email me a pic to farrow.joe@mem.sysco.com. I have the correct oval grills with the studs attached and think I know how the should go. Just want to be sure. Also what would be the correct color for the cover? Gloss or Semi Gloss. I guessing Gloss....
Thanks for the help!

Jim, your eight track may still work today but how about the tapes. Everyone of mine became brittle and broke (I repaired), broke (I repaired), etc, etc. I finally tossed all of them.

Can you post a picture of the speaker set up as I am in the process of the same thing. I was going to cut holes in the draped material in the well and mount the grills over that. Is that what you are describing?

Also, any ideas for mounting speakers up front? I only have a center mono speaker now.

Chris, with the top down the rear speakers are useless. If you are not restoring a show car why not just add speakers to the panel above the rear armrests (search the forums since this was discussed before). You have to cut holes(that what I did) but later you can buy replacements if you don't like the look. Also there are speakers for under the front seats that OK (not great). Remember you have a 40 year old car that was not design with for a killer sound system.
