I have a 64 pontiac catatlina I wanna change from drums to disks. I have not seen many kits and the ones I have seen are expensive. I was wondering if anyone knows any cars I can switch the disk brake system with to put on my catalina.I see swaps available for Chevys all day but there are not the same body style let me know what will work with my car. Any help is appreciated thank you.

I used the Scarebird conversion on my 64 Bonneville.. I would use Hawk HPS pads with it.. http://www.scarebird.com/

Out of respect to this board and it's members you might want to checkout Performance Years, this is a Chevy only board... :)

hey cut the guy some slack. lots of us have cars other than Chevy. Welcome aboard, lots of knowledge here and lots of people willing to help out.

I would look around to see if you can find a setup off a disc car. You really only want the spindles, as you can pretty much get everything else from the parts store. Barring that, you might be able to use your drum spindles. I'm assuming they are different like they are on the Chevelles, but I could be wrong there. Anyway, I had mine machined down to match the drum spindles, then got all the other parts from Advance.

The scarebird set up uses stock GM D-52 calipers. The 70 GTO calipers will work..

You will need a disc/drum master cyl. I use the 74 Corvette manual master cyl (UP 36367 ). It has a 1" bore that works nicely with the Pontiacs pedal ratio and stock booster...

I used the Master power Metering valve.. http://www.mpbrakes.com/products/product-detail.cfm?product_id=615

And the Summit adjustable Proportion valve.

Use the Hawk HPS pads...

Hey, how about going with 8-lug rims with exposed drums? That was the hot ticket on those big B-body Pontiacs back then. Wasn't somebody reproducing them? The exposed drums are larger than typical drums, grippy, plus they run much cooler than the typical enclosed drums (heat is the enemy of drum brakes).

I'm just throwing you another option. The Pontiac guys would freak at seeing 8-lug exposed drums.

just another thought, you'll probably want to grab the backing plates in addition to the spindles

ahhh yess thank you all for the advice dont know what I would have done with out it...are there any other things i should expect when making the change to disks? if i just do the fron right now it wont affect the back drums if i get the new valve would it?

Your 64 Pontiac B body has nice big 11" rear brake shoes.. No need for discs and putting up with "knock-back".. I don't think you want to change rear ends because the 57-64 Pontiac and Olds had one of the strongest rear ends ever produced..

Cam those 8 lug rims do look hella sweet and the old timers round here would flip they wouldnt know what to say or do i may look into that as an option
