my brake pedal has gone soft on me over a long period of time. I noticed today that, if I step on the brake in nuetral. its firm, but as soon as I shift to drive it goes about 2 more inches towards the ground.

any I Ideas?? Im clueless

My guess is that you have drum brakes and the motion of the car when you shift into gear is shifting the shoes and letting them out into greater contact with the drums. This will cause the wheel cylinder pistons to move out and draw more fluid from the master cylinder. Try adjusting the brakes.
