I have seen some posts stating that 17X8 with 4 1/2" of backspacing fits on the front, but what about the rear? Most of the posts are ElCaminos with fat 17's. What is the max for the 68 Chevelle rear, 17X9 1/2 with 5 1/2 " of backspacing? It has the factory 12 Bolt rearend. How about tire sizes? Looking for something close to 26" in diameter.

I used to have 315/35/17's on the rear of my 68, w/ 17x9.5". 5.5" of back space. They rubbed slightly on hard turns. They rubbed even more with the kiddies in the back seat and a trunk load.
I now have 285/40/17. they are about 26" tall.

I just put 17x9.5 Eagle Alloy 211's, 5.5 bs, Kumho 285/40R17's on the rear of my 68 coupe. They fit perfectly. Any larger would probably require rolling the fender lip, at least on my car. Stock 12 bolt.
Cheers
