: 5" bolt-on Glasstek hood - strange request...

I have a container of parts coming out from California to Australia in two weeks. One of the main things I wanted was a Glasstek 5" bolt on cowl hood, but they have a 2-3 week production time then another 1 week delivery time to the shipping company in Long Beach.

Does anyone have one that's sitting in a box waiting for your project to get to bodywork stage. If so, I'd love to talk to you about the possibility of either buying your hood outright or grabbing yours / ordering one and having it sent straight to your address?

If you have any worries about this being dodgy, I am happy to just buy it outright. If you live in SoCal, you'd make me even happier!!!

(I know this post is in the wrong section. Apologies for that, but I figure only Pro Street guys are likely to have a 5" hood!)

Thanks anyway b-man. I need to fit my 8-71 blower under it, so I need every bit of the 5" hood. It probably still won't quite fit, but it'll be closer :)

It looks like Tamraz and Glasstek might be coming to the party and accommodating my urgent request. Excellent!

What did you end up doing about your rearend and the back tires??

I was going to keep the complete rearend and build a new wider one, but disappointingly the original one wasn't what it was supposed to be. It was supposed to be a 35 spline spool centre, but it had shortened 28 spline axles and a mini-spool :(

The housing ends also weren't perfectly true, so I had new longer tubes fitted, braced them and now have 20x10 with 315/35/20 tires. I know that it's getting more to pro-touring than pro-street, but it'll keep the police off my case...

I've kept the 4 link and coilovers in place, so at some stage I'll build a complete new rearend so that I can swap from wide to skinny tires whenever I want. I laugh when guys are trying to squeeze a 285/295 tire into their mini-tubbed cars, when I now have about 8" of clearance to the chassis rail!!!

A bit of an update. Tamraz's and Glasstek processed an URGENT order, producing and shipping my 5" cowl hood within 2 days (instead of their initial 2 week timeframe). Huge thanks to them both.

As far as the rear end, here's the widened 9" ready to go in:

and the end result with the 315 tires:

Doesn't have the same wow factor as my 31x18.5x15 or 29x18x20 tires, but it's still enough tire to keep me happy (and the police off my back)...

Thanks Claude. I had to laugh when I parked the car in the same spot as where my 63 Comet normally sits. It has original width wheels and it made for an interesting comparison to see the different tire contact areas:

About the only similarity between the two cars is the number of cylinders...!

I don't usually follow the pro street thread, but be VERY careful with that rearend. There is a lot of free tube hanging out past the end of the 4-link brackets. If you get any traction, that tube will flex forward. This will not only damage the 1/4, but slice the tire. My 12 bolt had a setup similar to yours, and I used a turnbuckle brace to the center cover preloading the tubes to the rear of the car. Anyway, due to some contaminated chromoly tubing, the weld cracked on the driver side, and the tire hit the 1/4 and sliced the tread all the way around. Luckily it didn't go all the way through. I found the slice after a 10.50, 126 mph pass.

Ray - thanks for your comments and apologies for my slow reply. You make some interesting points about the distance from the 4 link to the axle flange. The guy that added the new thick-wall tubes was also mindful of the vertical loads. His solution was to add bracing that you couldn't see in the original photo. It's not a "back" brace, but more of a full "under" brace. I'm not sure of the relative strength difference between boxed tubing used as a brace at the rear as opposed to fully welded to the underside. Do you have any thoughts on this? My assumption would be that it might be slightly less than a back brace, but considerably stronger than a plain axle tube...

b-man, I bought a Glasstek hood after they agreed to rush one through to get it into a container. The outer surface of the hood looks fabulous, but I didn't realize that the bolt-on hoods retained the full factory-style under-hood bracing. I would have much preferred the underside of the hood to follow the same shape of the cowl scoop, as I'll now have to cut and smooth all of this for engine clearance.

That being said, the blower is still sitting up in the breeze through the factory hood for the time being - loud and proud :)

I see the brace now. I would think it should be fairly strong like that. Unless you are putting slicks on and dead hooking it, that should serve the purpose.
