I have the original carb and the car came with a Holley850 double pumper which was installed improperly causing plug fouling poping in the carb a lot of gas out the exhaust. Most folks here recommend a vaccum secondary Holley, although I personally have had much better luck with double pumpers. I'll buy your 850 if you want to wheel it. ( I also have a 750 double if you'd prefer to swap. rebuilt runs mint. ) I would run a Q if it's a stock 396. But if you have the original carb, why don`t you just have it rebuilt and use it.
