: Squeaking when turning/idling

Hey. First post here.
I'm completely stumped and don't know what to do.

I have a 1975 Chevelle Malibu and today it started getting really squeaky on my turns and it's driving me insane.

- When in idle the Squeaking is there but barely noticeable
- When in park or drive the engine seems to squeak when i turn left or right

I tried to isolate the noise. It appears to be coming from the serpentine belt and/or one of the cogs (the one nearest to the ground. 350v8 stock)

The belt is slightly frayed on the underbelly and therefore i would expect it to squeak, but on turns?

Maybe the power steering pump, the fluid itself, just loose belt.

Tell me what you think.
This is my first car and i don't know what the hell i'm doing.

could be the p/s or the belt as u mentioned...check for fluid.... an unlikely possibility is the control arms and/or ball joints, they make anywhere from subtle noises to awful loud squeling/squeaking noises. also the noise from the belt is different than the noise from p/s pump..... could also be any of the bearing running the alternator, smog pump, A/C, etc, thats usually a distinctive sound as well....if ur not too familiar just have someone look at it...don't let it drive u crazy, but i know the feeling...

The power steering pump doesn't have a constant amount of drag. When you're not turning the steering wheel, the pump doesn't need to do much work, so the pulley is relatively easy for the belt to turn. As you turn the wheel, the pump needs to work harder in order to provide you the assistance, and it gets significantly harder for the belt to turn the pulley. Especially when the car isn't moving, its difficult to turn the tires, and the pump needs to provide a lot of assistance, which means the pulley gets very hard to turn. Basically I'm saying that while it obviously shouldn't squeak at all, if it is squeaking because it's slipping on the power steering pump pulley, it's totally expected to squeak worse when turning the wheel.

I would try changing the belt, they do wear out. It's likely that the squeaking will stop, but it could start doing it again soon if something else is the root of the problem.

Look from the sides very carefully for pulley misalignment. Look closely at the pulley surfaces for any obvious damage or residue. There's a belt tensioner, which can fail to keep the belts tight enough, but it takes either a tool, or judgment from experience to tell if its tight enough.

I ended up changing the belt that runs around the power steering, screwing with the tension making it very tight so it was minimally squealing then bought belt dressing spray for the cog/spool.

It actually worked.

I surprised I know what i'm doing. This is my first car, i've only had an interest in cars for about 7 months.

Good deal. The best way to learn about cars is to get a good manual for your car and dive in and get your hands greasy.

Be careful you didn't get the belt TOO tight - that can be bad for the components it goes around - water pump, p/s pump, etc. ;)
