on the subject of wheels--which (and what type) of SS wheels came with or were available on 1970 SS? i quess this is the bigger question.

I grew up with these beasts and had a hand me down el camino 70 ss 396 but don't recall.

There was only one type of SS wheel for the 1969 and 1970 model year. it was a 14" x 7" - 5 spoke charcoal with silver ribs on the spokes.

The ones on the front are stock 14X7 SS wheels. The ones on the back are Wheel Vintiques after market SS 15X8's

FWIW, the 69 and 70 SS wheel like those pictured were called "Rally Wheels" in GM literature and listed under RPO Z17; standard on the SS and optional on anything else. I'm sure you're referring to the 'other' rally wheel with the top hat type centers? RPO ZJ1 but NOT available on the SS unless you sweet talked a dealer into making the swap. Knew quite a few guys that didn't like Goodyear or Firestone (take your pick) and had dealers swap wheels and tires from another car.

Those Magnum 500 style wheels on the '69 & 70 SS were also optional at extra cost on the '69 Camaro SS plus the 1969/70 Nova SS. They were 14x7 and were referred to in Chevy literature as Sport Wheels. They were the only wheel used on 1969/70 Chevelle SS (unless you count the 15x7 Rally Wheels on a 1969 COPO Chevelles with Yenko Suspension).
