The rod that goes from the switch to the key moved when I replaced the switch on the column. It needs to face the radio and it is stuck facing the windshield. I have wiggled it in every position and it will not let me put the rod in the switch. If i force it i think that it will damage the key tumbler. Ant ideas??

Possibly this one might help. Note that the ignition switch actuator rod pivots on the rack.

Thanks ! Now, how do you think the rod turned 45deg. Do you think it came out of the rack? Big question--do I have to remove the upper housing assembly to turn it back so it faces the switch??

You try rotating the key with one hand and getting the rod to the right position with the other?

Is it possible that you changed switches? There is a difference between tilt column switches and standard column switches. Could that be your problem?

Here is the address for another view of the switch, steering column jacket, etc.
Is the column out of the car? I know that sometimes you need to feed the end of the rod into the hole in the switch slider with the switch 90 degree to the column jacket. Then rotate the switch around to match the mounting holes on the column jacket. It will be much, much easier to mount the switch if the column is out of the car.

I can't visualize how the rod could possibly rotate in the rack.

You need to get in line behind me as to HOW DID THIS HAPPEN????
I tried the key in all positions while twisting and wiggiling the rod --no go---I did not replace the key. The only thing that is off is the steering wheel to get better access to switch when the column is down.
Whats next? Remove the turn signal assembly to get to the rod???
Would removing the key tumbler free the rod???
Could the rack have slipped under or out of the preload spring??

Looks like you're going to have to tear it apart to solve the mystery.
I just had one all apart a couple of weeks ago, it's not all that big of a job.
Jim's information should be a BIG help.
