350_Malibu Aug 24th, 10, 9:35 PM Why the F is chevelles.com listing banner adds for http://www.imvu.com/ and similar crap?
I can understand car/parts sites or some similar squirrel $hit like that, but a chat and dress up site for what looks like under-sexed 20 somethings? Come on... WTF is this site turning into?
I'm not a paying member now, but I use to be when AL and DOT were running things, but still WTF? If i keep seeing crap like this I may never be again.
Can 'THE DON' not make enough off money of car sites, that now he is supplementing BS like this?
Pretty soon were gonna start seeing banners to Playboy and such chit!
Sorry for ranting, just irritated.
350_Malibu Aug 24th, 10, 9:37 PM Oh look there's another banner for Capital One, and Another for Chase Bank...:(

Dean Aug 24th, 10, 10:14 PM Don't get irritated, get Firefox (and a flag.)
I never see any ads except one banner at top which I never even notice.

Same here, no ads.
But you should know the ads "should be" reflective of your internet habits on the computer you're using - it's basically tracking cookies via google watching your surf habits and responding accordingly. I don't think this site, other than allowing google analytics, google adservices and similar scripts/programs to run, has any real part in it.

No, two. But only one admits it. :D
350_Malibu Aug 27th, 10, 8:31 AM Problem solved. Found an add-on for my Firefox called Flashblock. It blocks ~95% of the adds and all I see is the little flash logo where that add would have been! :beers:
Krand67 Aug 27th, 10, 9:55 AM I dont get banner ads on this site...just the normal ads, Ground up, etc...
quikss Aug 27th, 10, 11:52 AM there are banner ads?

Has nothing to do with a flag, I gave mine up because their is no benefit to it. I use Firefox and I dont even see sponsors ads. As a matter of fact, I have found members that use Internet Explorer see more ads than I do as a non-member
Jeff
TheDon Aug 27th, 10, 12:08 PM Just a little background here on the topic of what ads are shown on the site, as I understand it... Google Ads examines the content of the page and selects an ad to display based on what it has read. They have nothing to gain, nor do we, by showing ads that are inappropriate to the audience.
It is likely possible that given the diversity of the English language and the use of slang terms in conversation, that the context of a post or thread could be misinterpreted.
For example, discussion of a "rear end" has all kinds of potential latitude, so does a term like "belly pan" and probably a hundred more that could be matched to a keyword list.
It is also not beyond the limits of credibility that some advertiser could choose keywords that really have nothing obvious to do with their product or service, simply to explore new markets. Companies like Google do work hard to ensure this kind of thing doesn't happen, but the evidence certainly suggests that some can slip through from time to time.
That said, we also do not have prior approval over what comes through. We, like you, can only react to cases where the content seems inappropriate. In general, I think that Google does a pretty good job. There was one case around last Christmas, and one other since then that were not in the best of taste.
We also work to load up the page templates with keywords that attract the "right" type of ads, but Google is probably smart enough to only give them so much weight if they are not changed on an ongoing basis.
Many of the responders in this thread have suggested browser configurations and add-ons that are effective in blocking ads from appearing. Whether or not you implement these recommendations is up to you. Some of the suggestions are quite effective.
Cheers... Don

Install this ad on and you won't see the flash logo

hmm, I can log on as a non supporting member and I see all kinds of ads then but I see none otherwise so it has to have something to do with a flag.
Mike Aug 27th, 10, 8:07 PM IE or FF?
When I do that on FF ,no ad's.
quikss Aug 27th, 10, 11:49 PM hmm, I can log on as a non supporting member and I see all kinds of ads then but I see none otherwise so it has to have something to do with a flag.
Then you're not using Firefox as I said. I'm no longer a paying member, and I don't see one single ad on this site, not a one. Even the ads that used to be down the right hand side of the screen under the other sites aren't there anymore, all of it is gone. I don't see banner ads, I don't see google ads, I don't see any of it. So unless The Don decided to completely eliminate every ad on this site suddenly, it has nothing to do with flags and all to do with what browser you use.
It has nothing to do with a flag.
Jeff
Dean Aug 28th, 10, 12:01 AM Using Firefox always.
Same browser either way, the only difference is flag or no flag.

Are you running the adblock add-on? Thats what I have, not a single ad.
As you know, I was a paying member for years, and I used IE and had a screen covered in ads. I let my membership expire and about the same time bought a new laptop and only use Firefox with adblock on it and I see absolutely no ads whatsoever.
Jeff
Dean Aug 28th, 10, 11:11 AM I hadn't logged on as a non supporting member for quite a while so I just tried it and it is different.
I guess you're right, now I only see a couple of ads without a flag but before saw a bunch.
The one that was most annoying (which I don't see now) was the highlighted words the popped up that Bing thing on mouse over.
The banner ads that I see now without my flag (one more at the top and one at the bottom) are kind of annoying because they catch your eye when they move and change with mouse over.
http://i153.photobucket.com/albums/s228/deancall/TEAM/TC_ADS.jpg
BTW, I have never added any "ad on's" to FF, I just do the version upgrades with what ever comes with it and I haven't tried I.E. browser for many many moons.
Mike Aug 28th, 10, 11:52 AM Dean ,assuming your running a Microsoft brand operating system ,and as you say ,no add on's for FF ,how do you get the Microsoft Updates?
You using IE for those?
Highway Star Aug 28th, 10, 11:52 AM That is your problem Dean, and why you think the flag stops the ads. As Jeff was saying, your flag waving view of this website shows more advertisements than my non-flag waving view of this website with the ad blocking add-ons available through firefox.
I see NO ads, and have NO flag. No banner ads, no google ads, no animated ads, no imvu ads, no sponsor ads, no NOTHING.

What problem, I don't have any problem that I know of jake?
Not sure I understand your "flag waving view" comment, sorry.
What does "imvu" mean?
Mike,
I'm running XP Pro operating system but do not do the updates. I'm not sure if this computer even has I.E. on it.
Highway Star Aug 28th, 10, 4:38 PM I didn't mean that you have any sort of personal problem Dean. More that the problem with why firefox isn't eliminating every single ad on the page, like it does for me, is that you don't have the proper add-ons installed. That is all sir. The flag waving was regarding your statement about being logged in and the disappearance of some of the ads. Again, to try to explain that with firefox all hooked up, there might even be less ads than if one was a full fledged lifetime member, running any other browser.
imvu was one of the websites mentioned in the beginning of the discussion...
Why the F is chevelles.com listing banner adds for http://www.imvu.com/ and similar crap?
:beers:
Dean Aug 28th, 10, 4:59 PM I didn't mean to sound like I was "flag waving" I was just telling Kyle how to NOT see all those ads, that's all. As usual, I guess I didn't chose the right words to NOT be misinterpreted.
So tell me Jake/Jeff, what/how do I do to my Firefox to not see the one banner ad at the top that I see now? (not that it bothers me) I'm currently running ver. 3.5.11
---
Does anyone know what the initials "imvu" stands for?
Highway Star Aug 28th, 10, 5:15 PM Dean,
Click here (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/search/?q=ad+block&cat=all&lver=any&pid=1&sort=&pp=20&lup=&advanced=)
Then go nuts choosing the ones you want.
Dean Aug 28th, 10, 5:19 PM Thanks, which one of those 23 do you use?
Highway Star Aug 28th, 10, 5:30 PM Thanks, which one of those 23 do you use?
I use AdBlock Plus, Ad Blocker, FirefoxAdKiller, and Webmail Ad Blocker
It takes about 5 minutes, they auto update when they need to, and nothing gets through...youtube ads, yahoo ads, etc. PAges load quicker too, without 48 flash and shockwave animated ads to download.
Dean Aug 28th, 10, 6:01 PM I'll have to try those although I don't really ever see much on any site either.
But thinking about it, I am running Computer Associates anti virus which has
# AntiVirus: Protect your PC and important files.
# AntiSpyware: Protect your privacy.
# Personal Firewall: Keep hackers out of your PC.
# Anti-Spam: Block annoying junk email and pop-ups.
# Parental Controls: Keep your kids safe from inappropriate websites.
# Gaming/Video Mode: Play without any pop-up interruptions.
# Anti-Phishing: Spot harmful websites, prevent ID theft.

It is free from my ISP, Road runner.
So maybe I don't even need anything else
Ironically, I was just looking at it on this machine and It says "License Expires 8/28/2010 :(
quikss Aug 28th, 10, 10:17 PM None of that is an ad blocker though Dean. I use Road Runner as well.
All I have is Firefox with adblock plus and not one single ad gets through. No banner ads or anything. Its all you need.
Jeff
Dean Aug 29th, 10, 9:45 AM adblock plus it is then.
Do you use the free C A anti virus that Road Runner offers Jeff?
Highway Star Aug 29th, 10, 10:21 AM Dean, I use the McAfee that my ISP provides along with the add-ons in firefox.
Mike Aug 29th, 10, 12:27 PM Dean, here's the free ones I run for security and have had no breaches :
Avast (http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html) and Comodo (http://www.comodo.com/home/internet-security/firewall.php)
Dean Aug 29th, 10, 2:45 PM Actually, I don't really need anything else, other than the adblock plus, today my CA says my license expires 8/28/2011
Mike Aug 29th, 10, 2:49 PM Mine supplies McAfee also ,which is why I use Avast and Comodo :D
Dean Aug 29th, 10, 2:56 PM I've had McAfee and Norton in the past and they both seem to slow down my computer too much.
quikss Aug 29th, 10, 7:13 PM adblock plus it is then.
Do you use the free C A anti virus that Road Runner offers Jeff?
I dont, I use Kaspersky. This is a business computer with all my business financials on it, I wont fool around with any free stuff on it. Kaspersky has always been good to me, and even though I have to pay to update it eventually, I know my computer is safe.
Jeff
