I bought a 1970 chevelle as my first car 2 days ago im 17.

68 Series chevy style rallye (http://www.davidsrallywheels.com/rallyrims.html)I was wondering if those would fit on my chevelle fine or not. I know the offset is the spacing right, well how do i figure how many inches do i need. I want the bfrich radials cause i like the white lettering and so on; so 17's would be nice to fill it up.
thanks for the help for i am new to this.

I know that 15's will defiantely work, but I don't know that the 17's will. MAybe someone else could five you a more accurate answer.

I think some people have gotten 15X10's on a 70 with 5.5" backspacing and a P295 50R or a P275 60R tire but don't quote me on that. Use the search function at the top of the page and do a search. This topic has been broached so many times that you are sure to stumble on the largest tire and rim that will fit on a 70. I am pretty sure that any combo that fits on any 68-72 Chevelle will work on your car

Now, I will editorialize a little as you are new at this. Why the largest? Why not just what fits good with no problems. It seems that other people have put the "largest that will fit" and then on some occaisions they will indicate that it workd fine "if I don't corner too sharp" or if "people are not sitting in the back seat". I will say it again as I have said before, if a borderline situation fits one car it may not be a perfect fit on another car. There are tolerances when these cars are built and supensions change over time, accidents and some mis-allignment is possible... all adding up to a "potential" problem ... but not necessarily. When asked, I always reccommend on a 68-72 (for the back) a P275 60R 15 tire on a 15X8" rim with 4.5 inch backspacing. It is plenty big enough and no fit problems. There are many that run this combo on the back of their 68-72 cars and is what I have on the back of my 70SS.

I hate tire rubbing problems and with this combo, I have none. It may be a tad consevative for some but piece of mind is more important to me. Also, I am not a big fan of 16"-18" or god forbid 20" wheels on a Chevelle. Many like them and run them, but my clothes are lined up on the right side of my closet (conservative), and I like the old school traditional look on this era car.

What ever you chose...good luck

Robert

Edit: To Moderator - I wanted to just put a link to the pic but the choice was not available for some reason on this posting

Exactly i dont like 20's and so on on chevelles. Just right now i have 14x6's i THINK and theres just sooo much space in the wells. But on your car they look awsome. I like that combo im going to check that out on tuesday. Thanks again

Just so you have all the facts. Those are 14X7's on the front of my 70 with P215 70R tires. I wanted a little more agtgressive stance (forward lean) so I left the stock 14X7 SS wheel on the front. Drawback to this is that you need 2 different size spare tires.

If you go with P275 60R X15" on the back you won't be able to fit that big on the front. Do a search to see what the biggest for the front may be (if that is also your desire) as I have no experience there with my combo. If you want to stay with 15's all around. I would probably go with a 15X7 rim with a P215, 225 or 235 60R tire. Either should fit with no rubbing problems with the right backspacing. I think standard bs on 15X7 is something like 3.75" and that would probably be fine... but I still suggest you do a search unless you have a good tire shop that will work with you or knows the correct bs for the front to get that tire in there.

Also being new at this, if you put a 15" tire on the back, remember, your spedometer will not be accurate any more. Neither of my cars (also have 67SS)has an accurate speedo because of my change in tires... no problem for me as I am a fairly consevative driver anyway. That can be corrected with a change in the speedo gear in the transmisssion. I never felt like going through the hassle of trying to figure out which one would be correct.

I dont know man i love the way your car looks. Most likely im goin to go with your combo. So this would be good right...
p275/60R/15 on a 15x8 for the rear w/ 4.5 BS

p215/70R/14 on a 14x7 for the front
whats the BS for that(front).

Once again thanks for your help guys. This is a good experience for me.

My 70 has 15 x 8's in the back and 15 x 7s up front. Rear tires are 275 60 15, fronts are 215 65 15. A 235 60 15 fits on the front nicely as well. Click on the link in my sig to see how it looks.

Don't know for sure what the bs is but I can check tonight with the old rear wheels I have in my basement but my guess it will be in the 3.5"-4" range. They are the standard SS wheels that came from the factory on SS cars. With a 14X7" rim and a P215 70 tread width, any of those bs will work without rubbing and the difference is so subtle that I doubt any visual appearance would be noticeable. You may have to compromise, depending on your choice of wheel style and their availability of wheel backspacings

Those (the ones you indicated above) are the tires and rim sizes that are on the car pictured above. I would like to take credit for the look and the idea for this combo but I have admitted in the past to seeing this combo on a 70 LS6 car about 3 years ago in my neck of the woods here at a show. I went right to the owner and picked his brain for a few minutes and jotted down the tire sizes. The following year I had it on my car. I think it just looks "right".

I measured the bs on my stock 14X7 SS wheel and they check at 4.25".

Good Luck,
