: How Fat can I get ?

I am in the process of buying tires for my 66, I have picked out 205/60/15's for the front, but the rears are in question. My local dealer thinks 255/60/15's will fit, after measuring I have my doubts, mounted on 15x7 rallys 10" wide tires might be a little tight in the wells. Would 225's or 235's be an easier fit? (I don't want to modify anything)

Thanks, Vip

Joe,
I have a 66' and the 255-60-15 fit fine. No rubbing at all and they are on 15x7 rally rims. Your selection of front tire seems pretty small or maybe that is the look you are after. Tony (1966_L78) has the perfect set up on his 66'. I am sure if he reads this post he will help you out with the largest (fattest) tire possible, he helped me out alot!

hope that helps some

Tom, like the look of yours, what are you running up front? Was considering larger than 205's but afraid the dreaded tire rub, and do not have power steering. Also would like to hear what Tony is running. ( interested in hearing clearance in the rear's running 15x7 rally's with stock rear and no spacers)

I am running stock GM rally up front 15X7 from a early/mid-70's Monte Carlo (I forget the backspacing, but close to 3.75-4 inches). I fit 265/50/15 up front. The car has Hotchkis 1" lowering springs with no rubbing. I had the car extremely lowered (another 3 inch+?), and only had minor rubbing on very sharp turns (parking, etc)...

Out back, I fit 295/50/15 on custom offset 15X8 rallys, with NO rubbing, and NO outer lip trimming... Optimal backspacing is about 4.75 inches for the 8-inch rim and stock 66 rearend...

The rear wheels I got from Wheel Vintiques, custom offset to my specs... This was done about 9 years ago, but at that time, the price was about the same as the other rallys...

The backspacing is the key, and not all wheel choices will allow the optimal backspacing...

There is over 12-inches of room in the rear wells...

By the way, the pictures in my signature are of different wheels, sorry...

Joe,
Tom and Tony are right, there's lots more room than you think without cutting anything. On my 67 I'm running 255/60-15 on 8" w/ 3.5 bs up front and 275/60-15 on 8" w/4.5 bs on rear. You can see mine at www.cardomain.com/memberpage/576515URL.com (http://www.cardomain.com/memberpage/576515URL.com)

Joe,

A 255/60 15 will fit the rear but a 205 is not enough tire for the front. I am running 15x7 Draglites up front with 3.5 BS with 235/60 15's, out back 15x8 Draglites with 4.5 BS 275/60 15's T/A radials.

Vip,

If you ever decide to run that thing at the track I put a set of Dragstars 15x8 4" backspacing with MT StreetET slicks that are 28x12.5x15 with no rubbing.
This was the widest thing I was able to stuff up in there.
If my signature works you can see what they look like.
