I'd use a wide bladed (2") putty knife with masking tape wrapped around the edges.

But I'm seldom that careful. tongue.gif

But I should be more often.

I used my biggest, longest flat blade screwdriver and a block of wood for leverage.

Key is to pry right where the clips are, not between them. If you pry between the clips, you can bend the rings.

I have a 72 El Camino with a set of restored correct wheels and trim rings as well so I'm really cautious when removing and installing the trim rings. I recently had to do this for an alignment.

I found what works for me is to let all the air out of the tire so that you have access to the part of the clip that hooks on the outside part of the rim. Using a piece of cardboard to protect the tire I just pop them off with a flat blade screw driver. When installing, again let the air out of the tire so that that outside clip gets under the side wall bead of the tire and keeps the trim ring fully secured.
