: Jeep GC and Chevelle steering box differences

I have plans to install the Jeep Grand Cherokee steering box into my 70 Chevelle, and this weekend I'd like to get my LS2 engine position finalized. I'm hoping to use the GTO accessories just because I'm cheap and don't want to have to relocate anything if possible.

My question is are the two steering boxes physically the same size? (for alternator clearance) or is one a little larger or smaller than the other. I'd like to just use the Chevelle one for Mock up purposes and change it out later if possible.

I called a salvage yard that has one to try to get it for this weekend, but he says that he can't have it out until Monday or Tuesday...

Thanks
Steve

I was pricing them through AutoZone and remans are only like $130...for that price, I'd go that route vs. salvage....

I worked on the engine placement this weekend, and really only needed a box for fitment reasons. I was just going to buy the one at the salvage yard, just to have the right size. But it turns out that the Chevelle box has the same dimensions, so I just used it for now.

I am going to have to end up relocating the alternator up high on the drivers side head for clearance reasons, The GTO version is just shaped differently at the front of it, and it just won't fit. The Camaro/Firebira alt fits just fine, but not the GTO one.

I'll probably go with the GC Steering box from an auto parts store, but will wait until I get a little farther along. That way if I end up getting a bad one, I wont chew up any warranty on it just sitting in my garage.

Makes sense, I have tons of new, uninstalled parts that have surpassed their warranty while I collect other parts...
