Don
According to Chevrolet by the numbers, CPY is a 71 Chevelle 454/425hp with turbo 400 an only 10 engines built.
Hope this helps

And the best sources say this engine never found its way into a production 71 Chevelle,,,,this engine was installed in approximately 188 71 Corvettes, though

This engine and chassis combo is a legal combo under NHRA Stock Eliminator guidelines. I have no idea how many were built but I believe a minimum of 50 units must be assembled to make a combo eligible for competition.

For what its worth; According to the "Chevelle SS Restoration Guide" 3,456 LS6 (454/425hp) Chevelle SS's were produced for the 71 model year. The LS6 option was then cancelled on May 21, 1971. Also the engine codes for this motor are listed in the Chevy parts catalog!

I see the CPY code in CBTN too but the Chevy parts catalog (11) lists the TH400 as code "CPR" which is not listed in Chevy by the numbers. BTW the 4-speed listed in Chevy parts is "CPP".

From what I've read, Some engines were produced per plant records, but none were installed in Chevelles. If any were, I think that there would be at least one documented example somewhere. No one in NCOA, ACES, or anywhere else that I know of, knows of one. I think if one ever shows up, it will be very suspicious and will receive close scrutiny for original documentation. Also, it will be big news in the Chevelle enthusiast community. Just my opinion. von

Ditto Von , I believe we would all like to see one , But I think it is like the rumored 67 SS427 cars, L89SEDAN

Keith; I checked the site and am curious. He doesn't mention any documentation. I'm going to E-mail Mr. Stetner to see what he can tell us. He may not respond, but I will try. I would think if this car is genuine, it would be worth more than $39K to someone.

Maybe the guy just built it to what a correct car would be. It would be a really nice car just the same. Way back I heard of a '71 SS454 convertible, LS6 crate engine and original LS5 block.

Mr.Stetner's (1inamillioncars) son E-mailed me back (says his dad is not computer literate) and said they were shocked to discover it is an LS-5 car after the ads were placed. I don't think They'll get anywhere near the $39000 price now. So I guess the question still remains. I still say we would know if the real McCoy exists somewhere. von
