: 67 17" best wheel & tire combo. Need help
Clyde's 67 Mar 22nd, 04, 10:35 PM Okay wheel and tire gurus. I have a 67 Chevelle convertible. On the front I have the Global West upper and lower tubular a-arms with the taller b body spindles with the Baer Tracker 13" rotors. Also QA1 adjustable shocks. On the rear I have the original 12 bolt rear, Global West lower control arms and Edlebrock upper adjustable control arms with Baer touring 12" rotors. Shocks on the rear are Edlebrock shocks. I am ready to put the wheels and tires on my frame to complete the suspension. I want to put 17" Torq Thrust II's on it. What is the absolute best size wheels and tires combination I should go with? I would really appreciate your help in this matter. I'm not really sure which way to go. Thanks, Clyde

DaleM Mar 24th, 04, 11:59 PM 17x10x5.5 w/275x40/17 will fit the rear and 17x8x4.5 w/225x40/17 will fit the front.
sarblade Mar 25th, 04, 12:19 AM What are the backspacing and offset measurements of tehse rims?
MarkM Mar 25th, 04, 8:41 AM If you're talking to Dale, the backspacing is in his post.
5.5 rear
4.5 front
Clint44 Mar 26th, 04, 1:13 AM A nice tire combo would be 255/40/17's on the front and either 275/50/17's or 285/40/17's on the rear.
DaleM Mar 28th, 04, 11:56 PM I've know of a 66 Elky with 255/45/17 with 17x8x5.25 on all four corners.

66ElkyBB Mar 29th, 04, 10:59 AM Dale,
That's my Elky in the picture (in my driveway). I have 5.25 inch backspacing all around - all four corners are identical. I'm using the GW front suspension with B tall spindles, etc... Just drove 850 miles round trip to Goodguys in Tallahassee and these tires worked great - very quiet and grippy. (Goodyear F1 GS D3). The wheels sit in a little bit toward the frame, but I have no rubbing problem whatsoever - even in heavy or tight turns. I bought these wheels from someone in the midwest who beat anybody's prices and I've never seen lower. I'll look for the receipt and post the info this afternoon. They were custom offsets, so for the same price, I had them chrome the inners so I wouldn't be doing so much polishing. They look really good, I think.
1966_L78 Mar 29th, 04, 12:29 PM 66ElkyBB,
Any more pictures? I'd like to see a side shot (especially of the front tire)... I was thinking of 255 (17s) on the front of my 66, but couldn't decide between 225/45 or 255/55's...
A picture directly from the front would be cool too, to see how the tiresits side-to-side in the wheelwell (how much outer clearance)...

66ElkyBB Mar 29th, 04, 2:17 PM After much "shopping" for these wheels, I found the cheapest place, by far, to be Fast Lane Productions in Mission, Kansas. The owner is Jack Genova and he can give you a quote over the phone for whatever you are looking for in American Racing Wheels - he sells bunches of TT IIs!!! He can be reached at 816-545-4747. For my special ordered ones, he charged me $1165 for the set and that included caps and delivery direct from American in Kansas City. It's quite a bit less for regular backspacing and non-chrome.
Tony, I will e-mail you some pics from the front since I'm not really sure how to post them with this message.
