Right on John. They sure had some great colors back then. I think this is one of those colors you like or really hate.

Al, how did you shine up the trim around the door frame? Thanks Randy

Hey Randy,

I didn't. That's new trim. I have my originals and I'll get them straightened and anodized someday. Then I'll put them back on. I think I got these from the El Camino Store. The were about 1/4 inch short near the handle. At least this one was. I haven't done the other door yet. It may be okay. I doubt it though. I checked with OPG and they have the same stuff as the ECS - all made in Taiwan. The outside edges aren't as sharp as they should be like originals too. There's just more definition with original stuff. I'm not showing the pickup so it really doesn't make too much difference for me. I had to work them a bit too just to get them on well. They're on good without any rattling. Used a rubber mallet and pieces of soft wood to shape and form them right.

I have all the same complaints as other do with the parts places NOT making sure the parts are correct. Once you hammer one of these, you can't return them for another. And even if you did...., there's a very good chance your gonna have the same problem.

So.....we have to compromise which is what I did with many of these replacement parts. Mind you, some of this stuff is pretty good. Most is junk.

Enough of the rant eh, Randy. :D

How the heck do you get that trim off with out ruining it? I tried to get some off of a wrecked Olds wagon for my Concours and couldn't do it without trashing it! What are the steps, tools, magic words?!?

Hey Tom,

No magic at all. I used a wide flat screwdriver and worked it very slowly. I bent the edges on the inside of the door first a little at a time around the piece I was going to remove. It takes a long time to remove a piece. Even after all that, they still need a bit of work to get them straight again, but not much. Then they have to be anodized. I'm going to have the folks at King of Trim in N. Hollywood do it, when I get the time and money. Again, you have to take you time with each piece. Some say use a bottle opener. I didn't. Just a screw driver was all I needed.

When you say "trashed", do you mean you tore the aluminum? Did you just bend it up a bit and think you trashed it? Or did you screw the pooch and bent and tore the hell out of it? Remember you're going to have some bends in it no matter what. Just minimalize them as much as you can is all.
