Hello all! My wifes 72 Chevelle will not turn off. This problem just occurred today.I started it just fine and after running it for about 20 minutes I go to turn it off and it wont shut off.
I'm thinking it needs a new key lock cylinder.(I think thats what it's called).
Can anyone help me? It is greatly appreciated.

Ya, sounds like the key area. Unless you've maybe done some fiddling with something else recently.

check to see if the actual ignition switch (block bolted to the top of the column came loose and needs adjustment. jim

What does it do, does the key rotate to OFF or LOCK?
Tilt column?

My 1972 Chevelle had the same problem!
Changing switch did NOT fix the problem!
Changing other parts also did NOT help!
Alt Light on when key was shut off! Had to pull Coil wire to shut off Car.
Found out it was a wire on the starter that was shorted out and keeping the circuit on after key was shut off. Taped it up and that fixed it.
Looking there first may save you some money for parts you do not need.

Had to pull Coil wire to shut off Car.

I did that once. My key was stuck, so, in all my wisdom I decided it would be a good idea to just pull the coil wire with my bare hand since I had no tools handy. Those rapid msd sparks really did me in lol. My whole body went stiff and my arm to the air, hitting my hood and me standing there half frozen, bleeding(from the hood). Fun :D

I'll look the wiring over and see what happens.Do you remember which wire it was?

I can start it and I can turn it back without any effects. it goes tothe off and lock position. When I turn it forward again it engages the starter.
