I have a 1967 SS convertible and was decoding cowl trim tag which listed
WD 2LR which R would indicate rear speaker. Does anybody know where the rear speaker is supposed to be located? Thanks in advance

Most of the repop catalogs offer the replacement boxes for the speakers. They only fit a real shallow speaker, which is what was made in the day. I installed a pair in my 66 (was not an option in 66), but you could never hear them, as they point backward. I am re-doing the convert now, and will not put them in. I very seldom have the radio on anyway

Anyone know how the speaker mod's in the kick plates work?...

I assume you mean kick panels when you say kick plates? Anyway, there is at least one company making new plastic kick panels made for speakers. They are available for both a/c cars and non-a/c cars. They fit great, look good...only down side is (at least on the convert models) that you can't use a real deep speaker which limits you to somewhat cheaper speakers. Check with Autosound or the usual chevelle vendors for cost and availability (I think around $75 for the pair w/o speakers, $125 or so with). They come black and can be painted to match your interior. I bought them with speakers and the sound is o-k....not great.

I recently installed the kick panel speakers in my 67 Malibu convertible. As previously posted they are OK but not great. I purchased without speakers and installed some. They fit and look OK but if you are looking for good strong sound look elsewhere. I have one of the Custom Auto Sounds newer dual voice coil speakers for the dash and that sounds better.

The worst thing about the kick panel speakers is the air vent. It is just a door flap that opens and closes. I really miss my old vents with the pull knobs.

Thanks for the heads up. I will check the Custom Auto website!

Don't know about a 67, but I have a 71 convertible with a rear speaker from the factory. I'm ashamed to admit that I had the car for 15 years before I discovered I had one. It is mounted on a bulkhead upon which the rear seat back cushion is fastened. The speaker is located facing backward into the top well. The top well from the factory was cut out for the speaker, and the small grill for the speaker holds the edges of the topwell right aruond the speaker. If you don't see something similar on your car, it may be because they did it differently on 67s, or the top well was replaced long ago and they didn't provide the cutout for the speaker grill. It may be worth your while to remove the rear seat back cushion. All this being said, the original speaker is really small and cheezy, so you want to replace it with something higher in quality. I had a 72 Olds 88 convertible with two stereo rear speakers mounted the same way. Good luck!

My 67 Malibu convertible came with an AM radio and had only one rear speaker. The speaker was mounted on the passenger side of the well compartment on the back side of the rear seat. The car was built in May 67 at the Kansas Plant.
