sometimes after shifting or down-shifting into (any) gear I hear a distinct "clunk" noise coming from the rear axle area. It doesn't happen everytime so this is becoming a mystery to me. Could it be the rear differential? suspension? loose or missing body mounts??

fwiw....my 67ss used to do this and if turning it would even "jar" slightly to the outer side. scary.. my car has a 12 bolt posi rear. when I added the gm additive to the rear end oil it stopped the clunking and jarring. nowdays I just use the gold lakewood BFL gear oil with no additive or problems....

Might be a control arm bushing or even the hole in the frame where the control arm bolts are located. I had one hole elongate and it produced somethng similar to what you are mentioning.

I had a similar problem. Solved it.
I don't know how to link you to the thread. Sorry. But do a search for the word "bang" on may 29th from me in suspension. Read all the posts from the guys and it may help you. Mine was stupid but it three days on the rack to figure it out.
Hope I helped.

I also am running a 12 bolt rear end and have experienced the same "jarring" action as you have. You are right, it is scary! thanks for the tip on the gear oil.
