Hello,

I have a 454 engine in mij chevelle and i need some help with the casting numbers i found on my engine , intake and heads.

On my engine i found casting number 14015445 at the back but on the side near the exhasut i found GM 7.4 L and that means late model block.

On the intake i found casting number 3964297 hi perf

The cylinder heads gave a very strange number. That number is 8272980 hi perf

Can anybody tell me more about this complete engine?

I think your head # is incorrect....

Block: 14015445 454 78-90 2 or 4-bolt mains

Heads: 6272990 454 70-up Rectangular/OPEN 454 service replacement, used on some MKIV crate engines, 118cc chamber

Thanx for your help but the head is correct. I will make a picture too show you the casting number off the gm head is 8272980.

It is rectangular.

I have read that the 454 engines with casting 14015445 did not have gm 7.4 L on the engine side and that late model 454 engines had the sign on the side off the engine.

likely a 80's ls-6 crate motor. I'd bet it's 990 on the head too but stranger things have happened.

There is a pad just above the timing cover directly in the center. If there is a stamping in that pad, post it. I believe the HP crate motors had a stamping here and some of the members here know what they mean. I have a crate LS-6 and it has a specific stamp there that designates this.

And later blocks have the engine id code on the front of the block ,above the timing chain cover.

Well all I can say is Mortec isn't aware of a 8272980 BBC head casting number...and they are the general authority on Chevrolet Block & Head casting numbers. Good luck tracking it down.

Um,that's 6272990 as Frank posted.
6272990 = 454 ,71-94 ,2.19/1.88 ,118cc Replacement Rectangular port 325cc intake.

See if there's an id code as I said in my prior post.

The front off my engine has no code. Above the timing chain cover is it blank.

Thanx all for your great help!

Does somebody know how much horsepower this engine will produce in this setup?

When i removed my timing today i saw a strange code above the timing gear.

It says TJOIXAA7

Does somebody know what that means?

On my engine i found casting number 14015445 at the back but on the side near the exhasut i found GM 7.4 L and that means late model block.

Been discontinued for years.
As to an crate LS-6 is good or bad is debatable.
Do a search on here for LS-6.

I have been reading much things about the LS6 but the problem is that i have to decide to stick with the ls6 and restore the engine or leave it standing and buy a new 454 HO crate engine.

A few companies overhere can rebuilt the complete LS6 engine but that will cost between the 5500 and 6500 euro's. In dollars between 7480 and 8840.

Than all the parts are original and used again.

It cost so much because the labourhours are very pricey.

Do you know if the internals are still original or has someone been in it?

It looks like all the internals are still original. The previous owner changed the camshaft for a 214/214 duration. He didn't like high rpm power. So he installed a cam that is for a 1500-5000 rpm range. That was the only time the engine was opened for so far i know.

I also have the XAA code but behind that number i have stamped the letter 7

So XAA7 is what it says. What does that mean?
