there has been alot of discussion about the famous 295/50/15s fitting on the rear of 68-72 Chevelles, and I just want to post that they fit nicely with a 4 1/2 inch backspace on 15x8 rims. The car we put them on was a 1971 malibu with stock quarters, stock rear with drum brakes, and weld drag light wheels.

Yup, the 15x8 (4.5" BS) fit a 295/50/15 very nicely.
15x10 (5.5" BS) works mint also.
I have run both setups on my 71.

the quarters are not rolled or modified in any way. There is about 1-2 inches room in there for deflection. sorry, I'll post pics as soon as I get a chance to snap some. It's been raining here for days.

i plan on dropping the velle 2" and throwing 295's under it.. will i need to roll the lip at all to make them fit? or should i just do it anyways just to be on the safe side.

325's will fit to, I've seen it. I've got 325/50-15's on my 69 with no interference. I haven't rolled the lip either and it has the stock wheel opening moldings. 15x10 with 5.75" backspace

I have 345-50-15 on my 71 with no body mods. You have to pick a tire with a small cross section but a big tread. I use the Mickey Thompson Sportsman "I's" n50-15. fits nicely looks beautiful ill try and get a pic up.

Doggy, could you show us a link where an N50-15 equates to a 345/50/15? I know for a fact a 335/35/17 will not fit a 68-72 Chevelle without mods. My car has 335's on 17x13 rims but it's been backhalved & tubbed.

Maybe in their eyes but 345mm equates to almost 14" wide. Those MT's are 11.8" and only require a 10" rim. That's why they will fit your car. Just for comparison's sake,a 315/35/17 on a 11" rim will not fit about half the 68-72 Chevelles/El Caminos out there. These tire manufacturers need to quit fudging the numbers so fair comparisons can be made. That is one of the reasons there is so much misinformation out there about what will fit and what won't.

First Off I'm Brand new to this forum.. Iv visited a few times but never registered... But I had to jump in here about this Discussion about tire sizes etc .. I use to run an N-50-15 on a 10 inch Polished centerline on my 70 chevelle. I Believe 5.5" Back space ... I know it was less then a 1/4 inch away from the Shock bolt Probably more like an 1/8th of an Inch... I also had to roll the lip on the outter wheel well and also ran the chrome wheel wheel molding. I also have two Beautiful 70 Elcos... And I just Bought Brand New 15 X 4 1/2" and 15 X 10" Nostalgic Hilabrand Style big 5 window wheels .. the backs only come in one size and thats a 4.0 back space so they are very deep and will not work but they are so awsome looking im going to narrow the rear end approx 1.5 inches on both sides... If i can figure out how to post pics on here ill post all three cars .. the Chevelle ran 11.20 on pump gas .. the Elcos are alot tamer but Very pretty. I sold the chevelle a few years back ( Wish i never did)
The Elco getting the New wheels is Candy Stealth Blue with white and the Other is Spruce Green with White Stripes Polished welds Etc.
The Blue one is Getting ready to Get alot Quicker.. Im planning on a Drag Radial for the New rear wheels .. probably a 325/50/15
Someone tell me how to post Pics Please
Thank you
