For the life of me, I can't figure out how to get all the bet trim pieses to fit together perfectly. And how does the peice over the tailgate install? I should have paid more attention taking them off. Thanks for all your help.

It can be challenging. Just stay with it and take your time.

The top of tailgate trim is bolted in place from inside the cavity of the tailgate. You slide those clips in place on the trim, then fit the studs of the clips through the holes in the tailgate and attach nuts from inside.

All of that is from memory of how I did it several years ago. Like 6 at least. So, I'm asking for some confirmation from another elky owner to make sure I didn't screw up. :D

Yup sounds right to me.
I found it easier also when installing the corner and angle trim to not only remove the tailight housing but also remove the bracket just inside the fender as well. lets you get your hand in there.

Correct, the tailgate molding is installed like Danny said, and the rear corners are done like Marc said. The long pieces are snapped in place, after the clips are screwed to the body.

Well, I worked on it today again until I got frustrated. Does anyone have a diagram? Nome of the pieces fit together for some reason :(

What do you need a diagram of? The 4 corner pieces can't go anywhere else. The tailgate piece is obvious, and the 2 long bed pieces are interchangeable. Here's a pic if mine.

Thanks for the pictures. The problem I'm having is that the side rails don't sit flush on the rear corner pieces. There is a gap.

Are long bed pieces repro? If so, there's your problem. I saw an El Camino with the repro pieces a couple yrs ago, and there were gaps on them too. Thats when I decided to find nice GM pieces. I did find a good pair, and sent to a polisher to remove scratches. It's hard to find good GM pieces, but they're out there.

Thanks for the help. The long bed pieces are GM. The rear corners are repro. Could that be my problem?

I'm not familiar with the repro corners, but my guess is, thats not the problem. Do you have an original gm corner. Put the GM corner together with the long bed molding, on a table, and see if there's a gap. A couple pics would help show the problem too.
Here's a few pics of my corners.

Hi Bill, you'been a huge help, and I really appriciate it. I will take some pictures to show you what's goin on. It seems like the inner lip of the long rails won't come even close to connecting with theinner lip of the corner piece. I car push it and force it down, but it doesn't make a difference.

Repop corner pieces, like I have, cetinly dont help your current situation but certainly arnt the cause of it either. If you still have your GM corner peice; mount it and see if its any better. If not any better then theres a fittament issue like maybe with the clips that hold the side rail down closest to the rear corner piece. After a long period of not being assembled things at least in my head got lost. On mine it took some "messaging" of that rearward clip that holds down the side rails on either side. I chose to reuse all my stainless except that left rear corner and thats the only time I had challenges reinstallin all the pieces.

My 2 cents

Pictures will help diagnose the problem. Are you sure the side rail clips are installed correctly?
