I wouldn't be so presumptuous to call it "Team Chevelle Ethics", because, well, who the heck am I..? But a thought hit me the other day and I might as well share it. Good time to because everything's running smoothly here, at least to my eyes...

My college fraternity had a code of ethics. Code of ethics are excellent things. Some of us have a professional code, some of us just live by our own.

The code of ethics was the " Three T's"

Truth, Temperance, and Tolerance
as it applies to the BB IMO...

Truth - no misinformation if you're trying to help others. I saw some the other day. Actually a topic that I got learned on here by Aug98 and a few others who know how to race. Inadvertant, I might add.

Temperance - showing some restraint in one's behaviour, or words. VERY important in a BB where we have no physical cues to help interpret. I.E., no flaming.

Tolerance - allowing a diversity of opinion and accepting that we all have different skill levels and knowledge bases.

I bring it up because, while there is no formal "Code of Ethics" here at Team Chevelle, lately I 've checked out some other BB's and I was floored. I mean why would anyone visit some of these is beyond me unless you're a masochist and need help in lowering your IQ.

Oh and finally, my fraternity's motto was " Therapusa Xier" which literally means "Helping Hand". Well, now, that's what it's all about here isn't it.

Now this code dates back from 1860 or so proving that some things are universal and timeless.

I am proud to be a member of this organization and very pleased to see that unwittingly, we, 99% of the time, adhere to a pretty high ethical code.

My hat's off to you gentlemen and ladies for maintaining such a positive influence on the hobby and on each other. I in no way mean to imply that I have adhered to the code at all times. I'm no better or worse than anyone here ( just way less experienced than "The Brain Trust" as I call them ).

At any rate I'd thought I'd share my thoughts and hope that we all always keep the 3 T's in mind as we participate in our discourse here. I think you all deserve a commendation for it. Particularly the administrators who have to police us once in a while.

The helping hand is alive and thriving at Team Chevelle.

I agree - this is a well mannered, well structured site. I've seen some of the other BB you are talking about. Frankly, I was insulted and disgusted at the same time. Some of them are filled with profanity and Lord help the newbie that asks the wrong question - they'll rip him to shreds and laugh at his lack of knowledge. At these same sites you don't want to mention another make of car other than the one they happen to worship - They can get brutal - unlike here where you get a little good natured ribbing (still get your question answered though). My thanks to all who made this site what it is!

Ditto, I know most people on here are trying to help, but occasionally we get some "New Blood", and they may be used to the OTHER BB's out there. Good idea Gene.

Gene,we must be on the same wavelength here.I was just contemplating how lucky I was to have happened along on this sight...I have NO idea how I found it,but I have INVESTED (because it is that IMO)the best 20 bucks of my life.I havent visited some of those other sights (what's "BB" BTY ?)and dont need to...but you bring up good points Gene..I have found that everyone here is respectful of others views and circs.I would just recap Gene's wisdom with always do onto others,and dont assume anything about anyone,because you dont know where they have been or gone through in their journey of life....in essence,be fair and respectful,and treat them like you would like to be treated...in life and at TC ! And thanks to Gene for posting his great thoughts on this issue...and Thank AL too !!

You are all correct. This site is great and one of the best reasons is that we treat each other with some respect (as well as good-natured ribbing when needed). No one knows it all and never will. Shaun and Dave you're entirely correct, most code of ethics have the "Golden Rule" at their core, but detail behaviors particular to the area they address. In my profession it things like full disclosure, always putting the customer first, fiduciary responsibility, etc.

I just thought the Three T's were so appropriate for us here, sharing a BB and this little chunk of cyberspace. They seem to quite elegantly (elegant like in programmer language, saying a little, but meaning alot) encompass all that we should be here.

I think we are all very lucky to have this site. We all own Al a great big cheer. I'm sure he puts in a lot more time on this than any of us realize. I think it is quite remarkable that so many people from so many different backgrounds get along so well. I'm glad that beginners questions, for example, are answered with dignity and respect instead of snide remarks. That, in it self, shows the caliber of the people who come here.

Things are nice here. I certainly won't do anything to mess it up. And if I can I'll try to help where possible. Even though I like this quote "Good people do not need laws, while bad people will find a way around the laws", it probably would help to lay out some ground rules. If nothing else it'll keep posts in the proper forums.

I'm sure I speak for many others when I say that I'm "lurking" in the background every day. Other than my experiences and limited knowledge that can be shared very infrequently, I keep my mouth shut, but my eyes wide open. Many things I've read here have helped me tremendously. Many I've read taught me things before I even knew I would need to know them. But I can guaranty that I wouldn't be lurking and learning here if it wasn't for the people, the knowledge shared, and the unwritten code of ethics that seems to exist here. Have to add more of the same. Even though I didn't really know about the site when I started looking for a classic, I sure am glad I ended up with the Chevelle, and not just because they're the finest cars ever made ( http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif), but because if I'd bought that Buick GS 350 I looked at instead, I wouldn't have this great community to rely on for all the problems that come up with older cars. I am the quintessential newbie, know nothing about cars but I've decided it's time to learn, and you've all been nothing but generous in helping me out with even the stupidest of questions. I don't know why other automotive BBSes are so antagonistic and nasty about things, but I have a feeling it has a lot to do with the way Al built Team Chevelle, and I for one am glad he did. Thanks again!

Seems like there has always been a "code of ethics", Gene. With people like you, Al and Skip pretty much setting an example, you can see it rubbing off on everybody. I registered back in 98 and even go back a year or two before that. What a great time it was talking to Skip. Too bad he's gone. All of you set a "tone" for this web site and it has paid off tremendously. I am one who 'lurks" around not saying much. Just listening. But with 3 kids under 4 years old I don't have much time to do much surfing. But when I do get on-line, this is the classiest site anywhere due to its unspoken "code of ethics". Keep up the good work.

I agree. I've been reading posts and following the site a lot longer than I've been registered. Done a lot of listening and learning. I've got to say that I've been impressed at the tolerance that the experts have shown towards the amatures. I guess that on this site, the members can still remember when they were a wide-eyed kid standing outside someone's garage just begging to learn. I hope we never forget that. Thanks as always, Scott
