: Tire fit issues??

Now that I have my 69 El Camino completely finished, I want to put a 2nd (day 2) set of wheels together, because the factory bias ply tires are junk, as far as driving on them. They look nice, but....

I've decided to go with stamped steel wheels, painted orange, with the factory dog dish caps. I ordered 15" x 7" for the front, and 15" x 8" for the rear. I would like to put M&H drag radials on the rear, but they have to fit inside the wheel wells, with NO mods to the quarter, not even the lip.

The question: Will the M&H 275-60-15"s on 8"(4&1/4" back spacing) fit inside the wheel wells, with a bit of room to spare, or are these tires going to rub. Here's a shot of the car for reference. Anyone have a set-up like this, that can tell me that they fit??

Bill, they should fit without any problems. Have used the same tire on my 70 elky and 67 ss with no issues.

Bill. I like the RPO license. Nice! Yes, the 4 1/4" BS will leave you room. I have a 4" BS on my 67 and they fit fine with 295/60-15's. I'm using air shocks too...for now. Came stock that way.

I had bfg 275/60/15`s on my old 69 elky with generic centerline looking 15X8 wheels and they fit fine without any cutting needed or rubbing. Don`t know what the backspacing was but I`d say they were 4"-4.25".

I had stock 15x8 corvette ralleys on my 68, when I tried the 275 60 15s with any load in back they would rub, jim

OK! We have 3 for a good fit, and 1 for them rubbing. The best thing to is to try a wheel on the car, and see if it rubs. Here's athread I started in BR. Maybe this will get me an answer 100%. Thanks for the replys. I'll post the results, when I get the wheels.

I have M&H DOT's on 15x8.5 w/4.5"bs on my 69. According to the spec. sheet, They are .5" wider than the DR's. They fit fine with no issues at all.

Thanks for the replies guys. My only concern at this point, is that the El Camino quarters/wheel wells are a little smaller than Chevelles. They look the same, and even take the same w/w moldings., but I'd still like to actually try the wheels on a 68-72 Elky to be 100% sure, before I invest $1000.00 in wheels/tires. Thanks again!!

Bill, you have to realize I use my el camino as a real truck, I even loaded 1000 pounds of gravel to landscape the house. When my tires rubbed, I had a pair of honda ATC's in back, so it was probably sitting on the bump stops. jim

Yea, the only weight I ever have in my Elky bed, is a little dust now and then, and I'm pretty good about minimizing that too :D:p
