Does less back spacing mean the wheel will stick out further ? The car is a 69 chevelle SS.
If a Aluminum slotted wheel is even with the wheel well moulding without a tire on will it be sticking out too far with a tire on?
It is a 15" X 8.5" with 4 inch back spacing.
The tire I want to put on is a L-60 15 inch. Is there any way to tell how far the tire will stick out on this wheel?
Did they ever make a aluminum slotted wheel with more than 4 inch back spacing?
Thanks to all for any help

I doubt you will be able to fit an L60-15 tire under that car, using a wheel with that backspace, without rubbing or jacking it up.
But hey, give it a whirl and let us know what you find out.

Check this article on backspacing (http://www.chevellestuff.com/tech/wheel_offset.htm)

Less backspacing on the same wheel will cause the wheel/tire to extend towards the outside more, yes. My bet is that if the mounted wheel is touching the lip of the fenderwell without a tire, it'll scrub the lettering off a tire.

I'm with Clint. I don't think the L60-15 will work with the wheel you're testing with. You'd have to check with the tire mfg to see how much sidewall will extend beyond the bead when mounted on the 8.5" wheel. The L60 is equivalent to a 275x60x15. I also don't think there were any slotted alum mags made with more than 4" backspacing, many today are in the 3.5" - 3.75" range although you can probably have some made with custom specs.
