: Mutha Thmpr Comp Cans????Need Help!
ElkyVelle69 Jun 28th, 10, 2:40 AM Hello I currently have a 1969 el camino small block 350. I wanted to know if I can install the Mutha Thmpr comp cams, and what else do I need to upgrade to make it happen. Do I need new heads? What do I need so I can install them. I was able to install my current comp cams along with lifters. This is my set up right now.
-350 small block bored to .30
-comp cams (duration ins 268 w/ lifters w/ stock converter.
-Holley 670 CFM Street Avenger Carb
-Edelbrock Performer intake ( Dual Plane)

Not positive, but I think I've read that people have advised against that series of cams. Perhaps I am mistaken but I'm sure someone else will know more. Maybe a mod can move this to the engine section where you get more relevant answers.
smokn72ss Jun 28th, 10, 9:57 AM mother thumper cams are more for sound .... buddy had one .. ****ty vacuum poor performance. took it out and put a comp cams one in and loves it ...
if going bigger cam you'll most likely need a higher stall converter. what rear gears do you have ? that also plays a role in cam selection.
Highway Star Jun 28th, 10, 11:05 AM To answer your questions...
Do you need new heads? It really depends on what you have, but physically, the ones you have will work, they just might not be optimal for a bigger cam.
What do you need to install? Do you know what year your block is from? If it is older, you'll need a roller cam retrofit kit, at least the roller lifters for older blocks. They are $300+ a set. You'll need a cam button, and a locking plate, too. Roller cams don't hold themselves in the same way a flat tappet cam does.
The consensus around here is that those cams are a lot of bark, and not so much bite, meaning that they don't really make power unless everything is matched PERFECTLY.
Also, comp grinds those cams on a cast iron core, and they have been known to go bad QUICK once installed. Not good.
Some people want their car to sound awesome but not be able to get out of its own way. Not me. I'd be looking ar asking around here for a cam that will optimize your current setup.
What are the specs of your setup?

Street rodders and muscle car enthusiasts just can’t get enough of the incredible exhaust sound and equally impressive performance delivered by these innovative camshafts. Applying a new camshaft design concept originally created for sports car endurance racing, the COMP Cams® engineering team incorporated early exhaust valve opening, long exhaust duration and a generous amount of intake and exhaust overlap to maximize your engine’s nasty-idling characteristics without negatively impacting power output or streetability.
Highway Star Jun 28th, 10, 12:27 PM I stand corrected. Thanks.
Dave Birdwell Jun 28th, 10, 9:02 PM This line of cams is all smoke and mirrors. If you put one in, you'll be wishing you had that 268H back in there. If you have a decent flowing set of heads, which it soesn't sound like you have anything more than stock, save your money and get at least a pair of the vortec heads and the matching intake. That will wake up your engine more than one of these junk cams. Then after the head upgrade, you could move up to a 270H or a 280H cam, but that will require a new torque converter to let the car idle properly.
Long story short, if you have a bunch of money to spend, then tell us what you want from the car, and we'll go from there. If you don't have $$$$, then leave well enough alone... :D
smokn72ss Jun 28th, 10, 9:29 PM well said there .... I think the mutha thumper is all smoke .... sound is decetn but wtill won't be able to back it up ..... might as well save up and build it the way you want it to sound and perform. then you won't have to tail between your legs when a ricer or 5.0 picks on ya .. lol
sixt9er Jun 29th, 10, 1:43 AM +1...This ENTIRE cam line is pretty much for vehicles that sound intimidating. There are NUMEROUS cam grinds that make way more power and sound just as good. Stock heads will work for these cams, as they are not designed for superior flow capabilities and racing.
427L88 Jun 29th, 10, 8:20 PM What is the compression ratio now? Combustion chamber size? 268H is a decent cam. This sounds like a gears/converter swap.
