: fuel cell filler cap
SS509 Jun 18th, 10, 11:04 PM :sad:Hey guys, my 12 gallon clear plastic cell is starting to distort out of shape ( the top ) and having trouble getting the flush aircraft style cap off. I want to keep the cell filler inside the trunk. Just wondering if anyone is having or had the same problem and how you dealt with it. Leaning on having a custom cell designed so i can get at least 20 gallons in it. Former race car with the cage tying into the trunk area and having only 18"in length between the bars. Thanks Frank
b-man Jun 20th, 10, 8:18 AM they all seem to do that after awhile.
Make a custom one and just have what you want. For a little more $ it would be worth it.
BlownYenko Jun 21st, 10, 3:27 AM The aircraft style cap on my fabricated aluminum cell on another car did the same thing, and distortion wasn't the problem. Seems that the locking tab was rotating so that the tabs didn't align properly.
For a fuel cell to be legal in my car, I need to consider the following:
"Where an inlet is located inside a vehicle, it must not be inside the passenger compartment and the inlet must be separately sealed from the rest of the vehicle to ensure fumes do not enter the passenger cabin and that provisions are made to ensure any fuel spills are localized and drain outside the vehicle."
That being the case, I need to buy/fabricate a collar that bolts to the fuel cap mounting ring, and captures and fuel spilt, with a drain line to the outside of the car. Has anyone seen anything like this? It runs the risk of looking a bit like a dog after an operation...!

SS509 Jun 21st, 10, 8:22 AM Found someone local who is going to design and fabricate it out of Stainless. Do you push the foam liner in the tank after its fabricated. Also does it matter what OHM sending unit you get. I will be purchasing a new autometer fuel level gauge also. Thanks Frank
BlownYenko Jun 21st, 10, 10:41 AM Are you going to have it polished, or stick with a brushed finish? Polished looks AWESOME, but you would want to make sure you wipe off any tiny spots that splash out when you fill the tank to keep up the appearance.
The foam liner is squeezed through the top after the tank is fabricated.
Autometer have gauges that work with any Chev or Ford sender that I've seen. They even sell their own sender.
Post pics when you're done - stainless will look excellent!
SS509 Jun 21st, 10, 10:37 PM Yes i was leaning towards the polished look. Will be taking and posting pics of entire car later. Thanks FRANK
prostreet69camaro Jun 27th, 10, 10:58 PM It depends on what ohm sending unit you have. GM is a 90 ohm sending unit. Mine went out along time ago and I never could find a direct replacement sending unit that would fit my aluminum fuel cell. I ended up finding one on the internet that you could calibrate. I told them the dimension of my fuel cell and they made it for me.
SS509 Jun 28th, 10, 12:57 PM I do not have a sending unit or a gauge at this time. ? Does this mean my options should be open as long as the gauge and the sending unit are OHM compatiable.

Yes just so they are compatiable. Since you have a GM car go with a 90 ohm gage and sending unit.
SS509 Jun 28th, 10, 11:14 PM Sounds good to me. Gorgeous Camaro. I noticed your pic's are posted all over. Seems once i put mine up i am told they were used already. I assume by using photobucket that eliminates the issue. Thanks again Frank

Thanks for the compliment on my camaro. I usually hangout on camaros.net. Anyone one can go to photobucket and get a picture of your car and repost it.
If you have a custom fuel cell made and cant find a sending unit here is the website that can make you one. It will have to be wired different than a factory one because it needs 12 volts to the sendung unit. It is a 3 wire instead of a 2 wire.

SS509 Jun 29th, 10, 4:24 PM Thanks for all the info. Mike. Not to get off the fuel cell subject, but just curious as how your car runs in that TEXAS heat. We have been near 100 with the humidity factored in here in Florida. ? Can you keep it 190 or below. Best of Luck Frank

Mine usually runs 200 to 205 in the heat of the day. Idliing in traffic for a hour. Not bad. I do have bigger fans I plan on trying.
396375 Nov 25th, 11, 2:42 AM They do make fuel cells with an external neck for filling like a stock car.On one of my old street cars I built a support stand that fit under the filler neck.I had to assemble it inside the cell which was like building a ship in a bottle.LOL.I also had to cut the foam up to fit.
SS509 Nov 26th, 11, 10:43 PM Just had a custom metal tank installed that hold approx. 22gal. Problem solved. Unfortunatlly car is for Sale due to health reasons.
