First, this is not a Chevelle. I have a 1969 Cutlass with a stock 350 and a Q-jet. Points ignition...all original. I drove the car to my storage and parked the car for the winter. I went to get it a few days ago it would not start. The car cranks the battery is fully charged. Before cranking a shot a little carb clean into the barrells. It momentarily fired, died and never fired again. I thought I flooded the car and called it quits. I tried again today to start it same thing. I pulled the plugs thinking they were fouled. They were not. Dry, clean in good shape. I filed the points still no start. I checked the carb and pushed down the the accelerator pump it is squirting fuel. I assumed the car is getting fuel based on that. So now I assume it is not getting spark? How do I check for spark? What else should I do? The gas is fresh by the way. Thanks is advance:confused:

Is this the first time this has happened? Try this..Crank it until you know it has enough gas in the carb bowl with your foot OFF the gas.. Hit the gas pedal 2 or 3 times to prime the engine. Get out, make SURE the choke blade is totally closed- if it's not, close it by hand until it is totally closed. Now crank it over with your foot OFF the gas pedal.

You can check for spark first by either having an assistant crank the starter while you are holding the #1 plug wire, wire end on a screwdriver, about 1/4 inch from a "bare" spot on the engine block. You can also get a tool from Harbor Freight for $2.99 that is much safer and allows you to check the spark, even while running. Very handy tool.

When it's warm out, I have to follow this procedure because I honestly don't feel like resetting my choke  :D

Points can also become glazed while sitting and need a couple of swipes with fine emery cloth. It's happened to me.
