I would like to run this combination as I need the 29" dia tire to get my RPM's down a bit.

I need the 7" rim because I have the wider 68-72 12 bolt rear end.

The problem is the rim I have, American Outlaw II's, only comes in the 3.75 BS from what I know of. So I can't get the 4.5" or 5" BS that I should be going for.

Thanks Bill

I doubt if they'll fit without rubbing. I had a late (wide) rear in my 67 for a long time with 235x60/15 tires on 15x8 Outlaw I's - same B/S, 3.75" - and they would rub with a passenger in the car. Your proposed 255x70/15's are about 1.5" wider at the sidewall (0.75" on each side of the wheel) and even with a 1" narrower wheel (0.5" on each side of the wheel) I don't think they'll fit. One quarter inch isn't much, but mine already rubbed the inner lip.

Dale,

Thanks for the reply. You confirmed what I was afraid of, they most likely will not fit. I would like to stick with the outlaw II's but it looks like they only come with the 3.75 off set much like other brands. It doesn't seem to be that easy to get the custom 4.5" or 5" offsets in a lot of manufacturers.

I think at some point I am going to need to deal with this wide 12 bolt I have. I can see new axles and some shorting in the future.

I think I will aim for some 235/70-15's which will also be very close.

Thanks Bill

My 235x60's fit so 235x70's should have no problem. FWIW, I took those same wheels and tires from the Chevelle and put them on my 67 Elky with the factory rear end (albeit a 10-bolt) and they fit with room to spare. I know the narrower rears for 67s are hard to find since it's a one-year only deal but it's worth the look.

Dale,

Thanks for the info. This tire thing is partially the result of me gearing my car too low (3.72 gears) for high way use. I hate spinning my BB that fast, even though it won't hurt it.

I think what I will eventually do, is get some new axles and cut and shorten my tubes to take care of the tire problem for future rim changes. Then I need to re-think my gear selection. I have already given up on finding the shorter version rear end assembly. They are getting rare and way too expensive.

I have also completely rebuild my existing 12 bolt, with a new posi carrier, gears, bearings, seals, wheel cylinders and brakes, so the shortening route would be the way to go for me.

Thanks Bill

255/60/15's on 8" Autodrags, so about the same backspace as your 7" rims - they don't rub at stock spring height.
