Hello Everybody. I have a 64 chevelle that does not stay running.
I can get it to start and stay running for about one minute, then after that it will no longer start until I repeat the same steps to get it to start.

How I get it to start:

I take out #1 spark plug
Rotate crank until Its TDC
Take off the Distributor Cap (HEI)
Realign it as best I can in relation to the Rotor for Spark plug #1 to hit
Reinstall Plug

I hop in the Car Put the Pedal to the floor and crank it over
The car starts and runs but I cannot hop out of the car or it will die.

While its running it feels like it is stumbling and unless I keep giving it Gas it will die. If I keep giving it gas it stays on for roughly One minute until it dies again.

Once dead it will no longer Fire up.
It turns over and sounds like its about to but will not fire.
I played with the distributor moving it around and got it to refire Once but for only like 3 seconds then it shut off.

Stock 283/Powerglide 2barrel Carb
Car was running fine, let it sit for a couple of months and this is whats now going on.

Items Replaced:
Spark plug Wires
Spark PLugs
Hei Coil/Modules/Rotor/Cap (MSD)
Wire that ran from HEI to fusebox with a New One.

Since it has been setting , fresh gas would be a good place to start. Todays gas goes bad quick.

You need to set your timing correctly using a timing light. Then you need to ensure your distributor clamp is tight. Once those are done, verify that your "breaker" plate is not moving around because it is worn. (I used quotes because an HEI has a module in place of a breaker points.)

it was sitting for roughly 2-3months,

I did put some fresh 91 in there though just to make sure, about 2 Gallons.
Should I add more?

I tighten down the distributor clamp down as much as possible while leaving it a little leeway in hopes that the car would stay running and I could run out and time it with the light. But I have tried with it bolted all the way down with 0 play with same results.

I cant time it with the light because it turns off if I get out of the car.
It only stays on with me messing with the throttle.

Installed a brand new Module in the distributor.

All help appriciated. thanks fellas

2-3 months is enough for fuel to go bad.

Either get a buddy or crank up your idle speed to keep the car running while you check timing. Report back your timing and the RPM you check it at.

I think the timing is too advanced? Im going to try and retard it some and see if the motor stays fired up.

have you checked your timing?

How old is the motor?? Orig with a lot of miles??Timing gear has nylon teeth that could be falling apart so its jumping timing .you say that you have to reset to tdc everytime to start it,,,hmmmmm????

Sounds to me like it is flooding out...if it were me, I would check and make sure you dont have some junk in the needle and seat or that your float is stuck. You fire it up, it starts dumping fuel until it floods out and dies. I would venture to say that if you did nothing, then jumped back in after 15 minutes and put the pedal to the floor (normal procedure when you've flooded and engine) that it would again fire up (and die).

I wont dismiss the timing though, as stated, you should set that with a timing light. Good luck.

My buddy figured it out guys. It was the Secondary Bushing in the Distributor. I had left the Original when I rebuilt it. We replaced it and the motor fired right up and kept running. Now its running great. Back to cruising for the summer :) Now time to look at performance
