Will a 295-50-R15 tire on a 15x8 wheel with 3 3/4" back spacing fit under the back of a 67 chevelle. The tire is 26 inches tall. Is there enough room between the tire anf the frame/wheelwell or might i have to run a spacer. Thanks

3 3/4 wont cut it. It would have to be 4 1/2 to fit properly. There are guy's on the site that have it this way with no rubbing. I'll be doing the same in the future.

Pops right, I just went through alot of research and alot of guys are running 295/50/15's on their 66 and 67 Chevelles but you have to have at least
4.5 or 5.0 BS. I decided on Draglites with 4.5 BS. with 275/60/15 TAs and it looks bitchin. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Rick Do you have any pics of the 275-50-15's. What has to be donr to fit the 295's. Would a rear end form a 69-72 work for back spacing. I hear they are wider than the 67's. Im gonna be gettin a diff rear for it so mabey Ill be able to run the 295's Thanks

With a longer rear you'll need even more backspacing to center the wheel in the wheel well

We lowered my 67' and I still run 295-50-R15's. I'm not sure the backspacing on the rim, but whatever it is, it makes the tire tuck under there nice and tight. graemlins/beers.gif

Im not to worried about the tires being centered in the wheel wells. If they stick out an inch or 2 or 3 thad be alright. I just dont want the tire to hit the wheel well or the wheel well lip. Im gonna be puting QA1 adjustable coilovers on so they can give me some extra lift if I need it for clearance. WHat is the ideal back spacing for a 67 chevelle? Thanks

graemlins/waving.gif Like said a few times above, on a 8" rim 4 1/2"'s of backspacing would probably be ideal. As for the wheels and tires sticking out, if thats alright with you then go for it. I can tell you though the higher you raise that rear the more wheel hopp you'll have and the ride quality will suffer. Not to mention the stiff adjustable shocks will reek havock on the frame mounting points in the long run(better than air shocks though). Also there's usually local laws that say the tire can only stick so far out of the wheel well without a flare of some kind attached, you'll have to check with the local law for whats acceptable in your area. I'm not trying to discourage you from doing this just giving you something to think about. I hope everything works out for you. Thanks graemlins/thumbsup.gif

I run BFG 295-50/15s on the back of my 66 Convertible, on 15X8 ralleys (custom-offset versions from Wheel Vintiques, as GM ralleys do not have the proper offset)... No rubbing and no trimming of the outer lip... And the car used to be extremely lowered, still no problems...

I think the BS is close to 5 inches... with a 1966 12-bolt...

Later rears will necessitate more backspacing...

No body makes a decent looking rim in the size I want so that is why Im trying to fit these 15x8's under there. The only BS that is offered for the rim I like is 3 3/4. I am looking for a 16x10 for the rear. I like the look of the tires sticking out past the wheel wells. My local laws say no more then 2 inches past the widest part of the wheel well. Im having difficulties trying to find a tire I like also. I want a 26 to 28 inch tall tire and at least 10 inches of tread, but 11 - 12 would be better. Nobody is going this rout anymore they all like that "DUB" crap. Thats not muscle thats import. If I wanted a 17 or bigger rim I would be building a rice burner. Will the 295-50-15 fit under the wheel well lip if the tire sticks out past the edge? Does anyone make a decent 16x10 rim? In crome? That looks half way decent?!

1 probably will stick out
2 look to see what cragar might offer
3 Dubs are 20 inchers FYI

I know dubs are 20 inches. I just dont really care for the big rim low pro tire. Muscle cars are supposed to have smaller rims (15-16) and a lot of rubber under the rear. Thanks for the help.

I myself am running a 71 12bolt in my 66 Chevelle. I have 15x8 Weld's with 5 1/2bs and with 295/50/15 they have 5/8 in. clearance on the inside and 1 in. clearance on the outside. With 235/60/15 it definitely gives it a mean look. So with late 12 bolt in early car, 5.5 is needed to fit the big meats. I could prob. use a 15x9 rim even but a 15x10 won't fit without rubbing the outside lip.

66 with original 12 bolt ......I was watching the earlier post re 15x 10 on 66 to see if anyone had made that work ...... but are you guys saying a 15 x 9 would work with 5" BS ?? I am having custom 66 stock steel wheels made so can configure any size to make 275/60-15 Redlines fit with no rubbing and also 28x13.50-15 MT ET street slicks

Thanks Bill

On my 71 Elky I have 8" with 4"BS and can barely fit 275-50-15 without them rubbing on the outer lip. The car is lowered a couple of inches.
Heres a link to some pic if you want to see.

I thought you said you didn't like the ricer look?
We did stuff like the above thirty years ago because we couldn't get wheels with the correct backspacing. Also,we were young & dumb and didn't know any better. There's no excuse for that, today.
Save up and get the right wheels & tires so they will stay inside the fenders.

Bill (CDN SS),
I have a 66 Chevelle with a stock 66 12-bolt, and my rims are 15X8 with about 5 inches of BS... So I think a 15X9 or 15X10 will definitely need more than only 5 inches, probably 5.5" on the 15X9...

What are you planning to run for tires with the 16 x 10's? I'm running 16 x 8's with 255 - 50's. I'd like to go wider if I can find something I like. Not many manufacturers make anything wider (or even as wide) as the 255. In fact the ONLY tire I've found wider is the BFG T/A at 265 and 295-50-16.
Has anyone seen these on a car?

My rears are 16 x 8's with 4.75" BS, original 10 bolt rear - lots of room inside & out.

Wes

PS - I did try a pair of 15 x 8.5 Torque Thrust D's with 275-60-15's on my car before I got the 16's. A friend let me mount them on to check clearances. The TT D's have 3.75" BS. I was surprised to find that they did fit - tight, but they fit. I could just barely fit my fingers in between the tire & the outer wheel well lip (lips not trimmed or rolled). I didn't take it for a drive, but I'd be willing to bet I'd have got a bit of rub on a hard corner with a bump...

A few months ago- I tired to put 295/50s on my 15x8 4.5bs rims on my 70 elky-
It was not even close to fitting, tire stuck way out under the fender lip- the body would have come right down onto the tread...

I think 5 or 5.5 bs would have been required on my rims for them to fit..
