jet_tech Feb 18th, 03, 8:04 PM 1966_L78, I also have A 66 chevelle convert.I like the look of your car with your choice of tire sizes. My question is, can you give me the tire diameter, when mounted on your 8 inch rear wheel. I WOULD GREATLY APPRECIATE IT !. Also what is your back spacing.
------------------
1966_L78 Feb 19th, 03, 1:04 PM I am running BFGoodrich Radial T/As.
On the front I run 265-50/15s on 15X7 GM rally wheels (from a mid-seventies Monte Carlo). Not sure of the backspacing, but they are stock.
On the back I am running BFG T/As in a 295-50/15 on aftermarket 15X8 rallys. I special ordered the rims from Wheel Vintiques about 8-9 years ago. I measured my wheel wells and rearaxle and specified these dimensions to center the tire (side-to-side) in the wheel well...
I run 15X7 trim rings on all wheels...
I goofed and ordered wrong (or maybe they welded wrong) because my tires were rubbing slightly on the inside... I have to run thin spacers, but its okay.
This is with stock width 1966 12-bolt rearends...
I can't recall the exact offset (were they built the way I ordered?), but I can look up the reciept and see what I ordered...
I run an unmodified outer lip and stock trim with no rubbing on the outside...
I used to have the car extremely lowered, and still no problems. It was lowered 4-5 inches in back and 3-4 in front, had to raise it as the headers were getting destroyed...
I will lower the car again, but I will do that last. I have Hotchkis 1" lowering springs all around...
The car is kind of buried in the garage now, but when the weather gets a little nicer I can pull it out and maybe pull the wheel off and get the backspacing...
The only complaint I have about the Wheel Vintiques wheels is that the inner contours are different from stock ralleys. I tried to convert the rear to 1994+ Camaro REAR discs, and the setup was working with stock 15X8 rallys on my mock up... I tried to get the Wheel Vintiques on, but they definitely wouldn't clear...

jet_tech Feb 19th, 03, 5:05 PM 1966_L78, thanks for all the info. It was all very helpful. Next time you have access to the car would you mind doing A tire height measurement of the rear tire for me, While it's mounted on the rim. On Tire-Rack.com they say that 295-50-15 mounted on A 9.5" rim is around 26.7". I want to know if this is an accurate measurement.
Thank You!

1966_L78 Feb 19th, 03, 7:56 PM I'll try and get that tire diameter for you...
I was home at lunch, and I couldn't find the receipt for the wheels, so I don't know the backspacing until I pull them off...

1966_L78 Feb 20th, 03, 12:06 PM Tony (I am Tony too),
I measured the wheels last night.
I calculate about 5 -inches of backspacing needed with the 8-inch rim...
I actually measured from the front while mounted on the car...
The 15X8 rim is actually 9 inches wide from the very outer lip to outer lip (8-inches inside where the tire bead seats)
I put a straight-edge across the front outer bead and measured from the straight edge to the axle flange (actually the brake drum). It was almost exactly 4-inches- this is the front spacing... So subtracting the 4-inches from the 9-inches gives the 5-inch BS value... This should be correct, because I know these were ordered between 4.5 and 5 inches, and I now run spacers.
My measurement takes into account the spacers...
By the way, on the outer diameter... I had a hard time measuring... I tried top to axle center, top to floor, but the tire flattens at the ground and the upper side is up in the wheel well... I tried side to side and get a little over 26 inches... probably a little more near the center of the tread... My tires have lots of tread on them...
Thinking about it... It shouldn't really matter what the width of the rim is... The height should remain fairly constant, and tire pressure and wear will also have an effect on the diameter, about as much as the rim width will...
