I have a crazy idea to try on my '68 El Camino. I want to setup a stand-alone room air conditioner (one with the vent tube) and plug it into an inverter plugged into my cig. lighter. I would vent the exhaust into the smuggler's box and from there it can get out the drain holes in the floorpan. Would this pull too much amperage to be practical? Any other obvious flaws to the plan?

First could you show me what type of air conditioner it is? Next is how much room does it take up?

Have you ever heard of 4-60 AIR? Roll the windows down & drive 60mph. You would need a massive inverter for any house A/C which would need wired to the battery not the lighter.

A large enough AC unit would require a very large inverter and would overtax the cars electrical system.
Small window units are normally ~5000BTU,while an automotive AC system is rated in that neighborhood of 25-30,000.
There was a thread some time back on www.autoacforum.com about this. Once the numbers were crunched, it was obvious that it just wouldn't work without considerable expense and major electrical upgrades.

Yeah, but the El Camino doesn't have a back window and he wants to plug into the cig lighter. :) (sorry)

I had an employee that used a portable space heater--kerosun-- in the back seat on cold days!!! He had to oil the windows to make the moisture roll off!!!

Ok, maybe I'm just trailer trash, not really redneck enough.
This one is beyond my wildest Jeff Foxworthy imagination...
Please do not drive any of this stuff in Mississippi! It's too dangerous!
