Hey guys,
I have a 66 chevelle 383 with a Classic Auto Air ac unit installed.

Running a new 3 core radiator
2 electric fans
motor runs at 190-195 all last summer no problem

Just charged my ac unit today and now running down the road at 50-60MPH
when I switch the ac on engine temmp goes up to 200-210

I'm thinking I need a bigger raditor to keep everything cool.

I have a used original 4 core radiator that I could have checked out (it's supposed to be good) Or should I go with a new alum radiator?
Any benefits to alum over original 4 core?

That seems about normal to me. If temps climbed into the 220-225 range, I'd be concerned. The engine temp will rise quite a bit with the AC on because the air gets heated by the condenser before it reaches the radiator.
As long as your cooling system is up to par, there should be no problems.

Yes, a radiator with more surface area has more heat transfer capacity. If it was me, I'd get a stock replacement for the radiator installed with a heavy duty/towing package/with air-con option(s) for engine/transmission that year.

If you got a lot of money to spend, any one of dozens of custom aluminum radiator buillders will be happy to fix you right up. Check any hot rod magazine for ads or hot rod parts supplies catalogs...

Get in touch with Don at Alumitech for some solid honest answers. What kind of water pump and thermostat do you have.

The 69 SS I built for Texas heat had a Alumitech radiator, Stewart Water Pump and high flo thermostat. Instead of electric fans I had a stock fan and Hayden HD Clutch. On break in on the motor in my shop in July heat it took 30 minutes plus to open the 180* thermostat as it sucked enough air thru the rad and condensor to blow a hat off your head.. The person buying my car has not charged the A/C yet but it runs around the 180 on the street.

396 / 3:55 gears

The radiator is only one piece of the puzzle so do not scrimp there....buy an Alumitech, but it could be items mentioned above or a timing issue. Rear gears ?

The price is $660.00 with shipping .

I am working on getting caught up this time of year .. having a tough time keeping rads on the shelf .

try to stay away from the e/bay units for cheep prices ...even if you dont buy something from me .. there guaranteed to be made in China

The bitterness of poor quality lingers long after the sweetness of a low price is forgotten !!!
