i'm currently using stock rally wheels (15x7 w/ 4.5 backspacing) with 235/60 in the front and 275/60 in the rear on my '69 ss (all bfg radial ta). can i upgrade to 15x8 w/ 5 backspacing (want to buy wheel vintique ss repros)?
thank you for your help.

15x8's with 5" backspacing will work but 4.5" would work a little better.

clint, thanks for the response. with 15x8 & 5 backspacing, where will i be close to rubbing? the reason why i'm thinking 5 backspacing is because my current 15x7 & 4.5 backspacing rallys leave only about 1" from the outer fender lip. to compensate for the extra 1" on 15x8, i thought i could afford 0.5" on backspacing.
thanks again.

with any 8 inch wide wheel (on a 68-72 Chevelle) 4.5" BS gives the best fitment inside a stock wheel well. With more BS the wheel gets moved inward towards the rearend. SO, you would be closer to rubbing on the inside of the fender and possibly the lower shock mount. You should be fine with 5" BS as long as the car isnt lowered, and the rear suspension isnt too wornout. Old and saggy suspensions will allow the rearend to move more side to side, thus giving a greater chance for the tires to rub on the inside of the wheel well. Slap a 255/65 on it and drive.

green70, thanks for the reply. with 4.5 bs, will i be at risk of rubbing on the outside? if 275/60s and a 8" wheel is too close for comfort, perhaps i should stick with 15x7s?

swang,
I have a 15x8 wheel with 4.5 bs and 275/60 tire on the rear of my 72 chevelle and I have no problems with rubbing I have about a 1/4 inch of clearence on the outside, you should be fine if you go with this size wheel and backspacing.

On my 68' I'm putting 15x8 rims with 4-1/2" Backspacing, and 265/50/15s. I still got meat and I can even rotate them too!

Thank you everyone for the advice. I ordered the 15x8 4.5 BS SS repro rims from Summit. I can't wait to get them on the car.
Take care.
