Hi all, I always wondered what was inside the Impala fuel tank that everyone uses for their Chevelles so I bought one and sacrificed it in the name of all Chevelles. Turns out there really isn't much to it other than a small fuel "bucket", so to speak, to keep the pump from starving. Hope this helps all you fabricators out there. Enjoy.

Cannot say that I am at all surprised. Pretty standard GM design from what I have noted in my surveys of tanks at the Pick-n-pull. Many of the GM setups use that same kind of channel around a center pool. Most had dual concentric channels with entrypoints on both left and right. They also had only a single pool chamber.
I am guessing that tubular protrusion is the fuel return?

If you're talking about the two little towers on each side, I think they are there to lend rigidity to the tank as the other half has them as well. The big tube on the middle is the filler. Thanks.

Actually I was talking about the small tube that looks like it is sticking it's tongue out into the center reservoir.

I thought that tube in the middle was either a return or vent of some sorts as well. The scale is tough to judge, Is that an entire half of the tank? So it would be roughly 10gal of the 20gal tank?

all that technology is useless pass a half a g-force!!!
at full tilt I HAVE TO run my tank dead FULL on my 96 Impala on the autocross!!!

Indeed because there really is not much technology there.
My expectation is that you would need to be a bit over half full, say 2/3rds full, for your driving style ;)

Yes that is the tank cut in half. The tube is the filler and I guess the tongue is just to guide some fuel into the little reservoir. I also thought there would be a lot more to it. Guess not. Here's some pics of the other half.
