: 17x9 wheels, what backspacing?

I have been thinking of getting a set of 17x9 Cragar SS's for my 70. I think that a 5" backspace would be perfect, but they only come in 4.5 and 5.5, so which one, if either, would work? Thanks, Jim

I would go with 5.5 in the rear and 4.5 in the front.

I want to run 9's front and rear. Do you think it would look odd with a deeper dish in the front with the 4.5's?

You could run 5" backspacing in the front. Kinda hard to notice the 1/2" backspace difference from front to rear.
What size tires are you planning to use?

Well 5 inches would be just right but they don't make it. I have decided not to get the wheels anyways. My friend said the chrome would probably peel off just like the origional Cragars, and I don't want to take the chance. I know everyone has them but I might get TT II's, still not sure.

Buy the wheels you like, not what someone else thinks you need. Sure, there are a lot of TT II wheels out there but be a little different & add some Atchison Machine three spoke knockoffs to them or go with the TT II Classics. My philosophy about wheels is this:the right wheels will make even a beater look great but the wrong ones will make even a showcar look bad. So many people are unwilling to try different wheel trends that they end up falling into a rut.
Off my soapbox,

I think you missunderstood my last post Clint. My friend likes the Cragars but was just looking out for me and told me with time the chrome may peel. I think I am going to order some TT II's tomorrow, I can't wait, my car has fresh paint and chrome but is sitting on rusted rallys with bald overspray covered tires- the wheels will make it look better than the paint did!

Oh yeah, I'm going to be running 17x8 245/45/17 front and 17x9.5 285/40/17 BFG KD's

with the 8's get 5 inches in the front. Dont know if there's a huge difference between your year and mine, but mine are 4.5 inches of backspace(17x8) and I had to clearance some stuff under my front fenders so they wouldn't rub all over the place. Course wait, may not apply, your car probably isnt as low as mine in the front. This may be a nicely wasted post. Merry Xmas! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif(its still xmas on the west coast everyone btw)

A 17x8 wheel with 5" backspace on a 68-72 is probably more than you need on the front. On my 68 Elky protourer,I ran 17x8 TT II's with 4 1/8" backspace and 235/45/17 BFG's. Everything fit like a glove w/o any clearance issues.

I can get the 17x8's with either a 4 or 4.75 inch bacspace without having to custom order them. Which of the two would you guys recomend? Thanks, Jim
