: New Malibu, radiator recommendations?
CJ'sMalibu May 15th, 10, 10:39 AM Howdy!
I've just got around to working on my 65 Malibu and I need some recommendations. I've got a BRE 383 (500+hp/tq) on the way and the stock radiator isn't gonna cut it. My son is running a similar 355 in his 65 Nova and he has one of the Summit universal fit aluminum radiators with a DeRale fan and it works just fine with 530 hp. Does anyone have any experience fitting one of these into a Malibu? I've read good reviews and at $200, they're definitely a lot more appealing than a $1,000+ set-up from Be Cool or Griffin.
Thanks,
CJ

From what I understand the 1964-65 models are a bit of a pain with both the radiators and the brackets for alternator due to the proximity of the steering box. Someone could better answer your question, but if you want to run a non-specific radiator with a SB you'll need to get creative.

I'll be replacing the steering box with a regular ol' manual box, a bit smaller and a bit more room. I took some measurements of what is currently in it and came up with ~25"w X 21"h. I found a Summit within those dimensions, I would just have to fabricate some brackets or give the pre-made ones a try. I know I could make it work, I'm just looking to see if anyone else has experience with them.
Verle May 18th, 10, 12:53 PM Griffin has an aluminum radiator that will bolt in.
You can remove the radiator spacer to get more room, will have to trim the bottom of the radiator flange.
There is no problem with alternator/steering box clearance.
The stock power steering pump is close to the stock alternator.
Research different fans. There is a lot of information in the forum. Search the archives.
I assume you will have headers, that changes everything about mounting accessories so my answers may not apply.

It dosent sound like your a purest with the 383 in there .. so things like both inlets on the passanger side are out the window .
I would suggest loseing the spacer box and upgrading to the 66/67 rad and bolting direct to the core support ..buy a plastic fan shroud grom ground up and a new uper hose .
here are two options to look at while your shopping around .

+1 for Alumitech. Used one in my '70 Monte SS -- quality is outstanding and Don is a stand-up guy too.
