Red 67 Beaumont

Well, I'm sure this isn't a Beaumont specific problem, but since that's what I have, I prefer to post it here.
The car is a 1967 Beaumont Custom 2 door with a 283 and a 2 speed console shift. As far as I know it is the original transmission but not original engine.
The problem is that with the speedo cable hooked up to the trans I can't shift the car into "L" as the linkage hits the nut that fastens the cable. The easy solution is to leave it in "D" but it bugs me.
Now, I don't know if it was like this when i bought it because it didn't run or drive. The trans and engine were rebuilt as well as new bushings all around.
If anyone could offer input or suggestions to why this is happening, would be greatly appreciated.
