: 1971-72 GMC SPRINT - Grill Emblem?
Old-Dbls May 14th, 10, 3:10 PM Was doing some spring cleaning and came across a few 72 GMC Sprint items I had put away several years ago for spare parts. I have the "GMC" center grill emblem, the "350" grill emblem, and also a GMC steering wheel horn pad... Wondering where the best place would be to put these Sprint items up for sale, any suggestions?
Thanks, Chris ~ twhip@spro.net

72Sprint May 14th, 10, 10:41 PM The GMC emblem always brings good money on eBay auctions. The 350 emblem is being reproduced by TrimParts, so you may not get much for that one.
depley May 14th, 10, 11:24 PM I would pay a decent not obscene amount for a grill emblem. My poor Sprint has been without one since I bought it 8 years ago :( I would also be interested if you have a price in mind send me an email at depley@mindspring.com
orangebowties May 15th, 10, 4:55 PM I have seen the grill emblem go for in the 3-4 hundred range and thought you had to be crazy to pay that but they are not reproduced. I lucked out and found one on a complete car which I purchased so now I have two 71 sprint's but only one emblem.Oh and i only have 200 in the hole extra car.
Chris R May 18th, 10, 12:56 AM I have also seen those GMC grill embelems for 300-400 bucks. Not an easy to find item and even those that are restorable are missing this part. Im supprised it hasnt been reproduced by now.
depley May 18th, 10, 10:46 AM they might go for 3-4 hundred but no grill emblem is worth that much to me, mine will sit without for that kind of money.
Big White May 18th, 10, 1:27 PM With all of the GMC trucks and SUVs in recent model years that have the red and chrome GMC badge floating in the blacked-out grille, I wonder if one of those could be adapted to work on a Sprint grille where authenticity wasn't critical and something would be better than nothing.

I've seen people put those emblems on a Sprint. But it just isn't right. The main thing that makes a Sprint a Sprint and not an El Camino is the original emblems, and having bogus emblems on one is just wrong.
Dean May 19th, 10, 5:58 PM Will ya take $600.00 for it?
Just kidding, for sale and want ads are not allowed in the forums, take the offers to PM's please.

We are not all as lucky as you Dan, we don't run into ex GMC parts guys that have OEM emblems sitting in their garage at home and sell them to us for $10 :noway:
Now on the other hand if you wanted to cnc some I would be more than willing to pay $100 for one!

What Really Makes a Sprint Rare?
Dan, I Agree...
Some interesting observations made since I purchased my 72 Sprint about 10 years ago. Having watched 71-72 Sprint 4-sale ads on a regular basis the one thing that seems to be a constant is Sprint's often listed as being rare because of their limited production numbers, which is somewhat true. However, about (85%) of the Sprint's I see 4-sale these days have been stripped of their true GMC identity by removing all the emblems and usually changed over to Chevy or SS badging... I don't see how anyone looking at modern day sales ads can consider a stripped Sprint to be "Rare" when it no longer retains it's true and original GMC identity.
This past year someone was selling on-line a "RARE 1972 GMC factory 402 big block Sprint", it was on e-bay, Craigslist, and other sites for several months... The seller had decided to pull the rare "GMC" and "400" grill emblems off and was selling the Sprint without them, BUT, the last line in his ad said he would give the buyer of the car first option to also purchase the rare "Grill" emblems separately for an additional cost... It was No mystery why the car went un-sold for more than a year... This same scenario seems to be playing out all over the country, listing the GMC Sprint name as "RARE" for selling, but in reality the stripped Sprint's no longer have the GMC emblems that actually make them rare... Test my theory out and do a search on current 71-72 Sprint's 4-sale and you might be surprised at what you find, most are No longer Sprint in appearance, but sellers still want a higher rare price because the title says GMC...
In my experience I've seen more 71-72 Sprint's WITHOUT their original emblems than with them, and these days the only GMC Sprint's that are truly Rare (IMO) are those factory complete examples with ALL their original GMC hardware... In fact, with so many Sprint's stripped of their GMC identity over the past 35+ years, the true original un-stripped Sprints have actually become fewer in number and thus by attrition even more RARE!........ Again, JMHO

Dan,
I'm in total agreement with you. It's the badging that turns an El Camino into a Sprint. Assuming that you don't have the grill emblem in the first place, you've got three choices:
Pay boucoup bucks through the nose - if you could find one.
Don't have a grill emblem so everyone thinks it's an Elky.
Get creative and at least say "hey, this isn't an El Camino, it's a Sprint!"
It's not for everyone, but spending $300-$400 or more isn't either. It's simply an alternative.
depley May 20th, 10, 7:21 PM i just tell them it's an El Sprint.
dcarr May 20th, 10, 8:24 PM Well, yes, it is easy for me to talk, given that I was lucky and both Sprints I bought came with good grille emblems. And one time I talked to a dealer at a swap meet who said he had one that he would sell for $10. After the swap meet I went over to his place and picked it up. I'm keeping it for a backup. At one time several years ago I had four grille emblems (two on cars and two spares). I sold the worst one (still decent shape) for about $500 several years ago.
CNC machining one GMC grille emblem would probably be cost prohibitive.
I think making a casting of one would be easier. But either way, it would
need chrome plating that could easily cost close to $100. The only way to
make it economical would be to mass produce the piece. But I don't think
there are enough Sprints out there to have a big-enough market.
When Trim Parts did the fender/tailgate emblems and the 350 and 454 grille
emblems, they had plans to do the grille emblem as well. But they abandoned
the idea when the other emblems didn't sell all that well (even though the same
emblem could be used on the '73-'77 sail panels). And the grille emblem with
the "V" back cost a lot more to make than the flat-back emblems. I was told
this by Alan Colvin (author of "Chevrolet by the Numbers") who had originally
supplied the emblem samples to Trim Parts. Alan Colvin had a 1971 SP-454
he was working on. But I don't think he ever finished it.
Abe Siegel May 24th, 10, 10:37 AM I've accumulated these over the past several years to install on my '72. I think the grill emblem is from a mid 70's. They all need to be restored though, and I didn't pay more than $20 for any of them - all off ebay.
